SACRAMENTO, CA[font "Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"][size 2]—[/size][/font] California wildlife officials announced last week that they intend to make a second attempt at poisoning a Sierra Nevada lake to rid it of nonnative northern pike before the fish invade the Sacramento River system downstream.
The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is expected to propose draining Lake Davis and using a new formulation of poison in hopes of avoiding a repeat of a costly, unsuccessful effort in 1997. The DFG's announcement is expected to trigger environmental studies and possible legal challenges that officials fear could delay the poisoning until at least 2007.
