I got a reliefband anti seasickness device
#1
I got it, took half a seasickness pill and went on my friends 27' bayliner. there were 5 foot swells, which felt like 10 footers. I did not blow chow as the reliefband promised. But...i did have the nasty feeling in my head. We went back to the river (Manasquan, NJ). I think next time I will try to stick it out longer and try to ingore the nasty feeling. the only problem was keeping the band in the right place. having a sweatshirt and slicker on made it difficult. but with taking just half a pill, and not puking, it was worth the money. Worth it because i hope to get used to the nasty feeling and build confidence to fish puke-free.

Tight lines at sea, screamin kids at home!

Hello Reelseesick,
I feel your pain!! I am known for a bit of see sickness myself (chumming as some friends affectinately refer to it). I have found 3 great products that work for me and i'll go one better then the previous post, I'll take them the day before and the day of my trip (usually works pretty well). I use dramamine and it works but makes you sleepy, the best products I have used to date though are Braids Sailor Secret and Relief Band, I have yet to try Bonine but here good things about it. The good news is, it does get better as you expirement with what works for you, I can't remember the last time I was actually chumming and am rarely feel see sick these days! Good Luck and keep that lunch where it belongs (in your belly).

Good suggestion about the night before on the sea sick pills if they recommend that. Sounds like the band has done some good too hey RSS?

Sea sickness can be a real curse for those who get it bad. Fortunately, I don't but I know plenty that do. Glad to hear your comments about that band because we are doing some fishing soon and one person on the trip get's real sick at the drop of a hat.

Do you think is it worth putting a plaster over the band next time around to keep it in place?

That feeling in your head may also be some slight motion nausea as well and will be interesting to see how you get on if the pills are taken the night before.

Let us know how you get on next time around because I am sure plenty of others on this board will be interested to know if you can stop the human chum line.

One final suggestion on sea sickness having noted Mike's comment above. If you are really sensitive to anti-histamines (like Dramamine and others), or other anti-nausea medications as some people are, then then find a qualified/skilled hypnotherapist and tackle the problem from that angle.

I know several people who have had great success using this approach.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve - The MJB
BFT Lures/Baits
http://www.demonjigs.com

Hello Steve,
I've never heard the "hypnotherapist" route. What do you here about it and any idea what it costs?

Mike

G'day Mike (and any other anglers who may get sea sick).

Basically the idea is to do a few deeply relaxed sessions with a fully qualified/skilled hypnotherapist who provides you with some alternative suggestions to getting sea sick e.g. that you won't get sick. These messages are about settling your inner ears, which control balance and motion, and other parts of your balance phsyiology, which in turn reduces and/or or eliminates the sickness feeling.

Cost wise, I am not sure how that might, or might not, be covered by various US medical insurances. I suggest checking with them to see if they do and to what extent.

A lot of MD's are qualified to do hypnotherapy so if you know one then have a chat to them about it, and the cost per session, as an alternative to medication if it does not agree with you or is not working.

Registered/Practising Psychologists are the other main group of professionals who practice in this area and some even specialise in hypnotherapy so take a look in your local yellow pages.

I suppose the "short heads up" on this method is comparing it to something like "a sports psychology set of messages" while being deeply relaxed and yet fully concious.

No "hocus pocus" or anything like you may have seen on TV.

At the same time, it does work for everyone given that some people are more likely to take up the messages than others.

Even so, if you have done the "long train and chum line to hell more times than you can remember", then it is one very serious option to consider.

How's that. A useful enough picture?

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve - The MJB
BFT Lures/Baits
http://www.demonjigs.com

Yep that's the short story Capt. Dan and glad you re-emphasised the qualified part.

It's not pretty that human chumming thing and it don't sound good either. Not only that, it has no side benefits like real chum does and can really disrupt the fishing for those who get it bad.

Speaking of which, hows the fishing up their and what's biting on your local waters?

Did I mention that we only have 6 weeks to go and then were off to fish a small tourny in Western Samoa? A long overdue holiday as well. And the water? Pacific cobalt blue like I have never seen before in all my travels.

I feel like a dog on the chain let me tell ya!

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve - The MJB
BFT Lures/Baits
http://www.demonjigs.com

This works for me and I've tried this on a lot of other people also:

1) Take one Bonine the night before you leave (about 6-8 hours before the boat leaves the dock. Take another 12-18 hours after the first one. On multi-day trips take another every 24 hours.

2) Eat! Eat before you get on the boat, eat while you are on the boat. Stay away from oily foods and stick to rice, bread or crackers. Starches are a great thing to have in your stomach at all times. You need something to soak up the acids in your stomach! I take along Japanese rice balls with me. Don't forget water.

3) Ginger pills. Use these throughout the day if you still feel a little queasy. Ginger has a soothing effect on your stomach. Try it - it really works!

4) Fresh air. I usually feel a little strange after I've inhaled second-hand smoke. Stay clear from it and it will help you to be outside on the deck.

Good luck!

Jeff

--
troutman = half trout / half man

Don't know if you guys know this or not, but the same ingredient that's in "the patch" (scopolamine) is now available in pill form. It's also still prescription, but one of the great things about this new drug is that dissolves quickly and acts pretty fast compared to the patch. I just got some and will be trying it shortly.
Here's the website:

http://www.hopepharm.com/motion/index.htm

Jeff

btw-I'm not affiliated with Hope Pharmaceuticals, Scopace.com, or anything like that.....etc

Jeff M. Just a word of caution about Scopolomine based drugs for motion sickness.

This drug is commonly used for anaesthesia given that it inhibits salivation. In other words it will dry your mouth up something severe... Be careful because either tabs or patches can also increase the risk of dehydration and/or leave you as "dry as a lime Burner's boot".

I imagine it should say that on any information that comes with either form e.g. tabs or patches. Read the details carefully.

Even so, the risk is even higher if your taking them in hot weather. Be careful, drink lots of water, avoid alcohol ( because it's a diuretic) and will cause you to loose even more fluids..

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve - The MJB
BFT Lures/Baits
http://www.demonjigs.com

Just a word of warning abut Scopolomine based drugs given that they will dry out your mouth out something severe.

Read the instructions carefully for either patches or tabs, avoid the heat/sun where possible, drink heap's and stay away from alcohol because that is a diuretic as well (makes you loose more fluid than normal).

Scopolomine is a drug that has been used in Anaesthesia for years because of it's drying out properties and to increase safety while your under. Treat it with respect if you use either patches or tabs.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve - The MJB
BFT Lures/Baits
http://www.demonjigs.com

Thanks Steve! Since I love to have a beer or two while I'm fishing, I may have to stay away from the Scop! Back to Bonine, I guess! Smile

Jeff Jost
