Any one ever built a trailer?
#1
I have figured out the boat portion of a 16 foot long trailer to handle my 14 foot alum. boat. I dont know how/where/what to use for an axle. Could I get a rear end off an old ford escort or something and use that? Or are there actual axles you can get for not too much moolah to mount the whole thing to? I would use leaf springs I think just for a little bounce protection, unless I had to add shocks to that then I may bag it and use the tires for absorbtion. any one ever actually "built" a trailer before? where is a good place for steel, supplies and such? I have seen the bow rests in/at cabelas and sports and all the accessories, I just cant afford or reason spending 500 or so on a trailer for a boat I paid 100 for. any help is gratefully accepted, and as always thanks in advance.

I've built several. On something that simple you could go down to Harbor Freight and sligtly transform one of theres (this would be a cheap way) Or there are several places around that will sell the axle and tires and wheels, I use lucky B in ogden when I build mine.

call hendersons and give them your specifics and they will build one for ya for around $100 springs and hangers and everything but tires.
I've bought several from them and they are great to work with.

Hey, glad to hear that old boat is still floating for you. Is the old motor still going, too?

As I mentioned, we used to haul that thing in the bed of our pickup, then carry it down to the lake. If you are wanting a trailer to launch it from, the one thing I would suggest is go light weight, and make sure the bearings, axles, and electrical can take the water. You might be better off to keep your eye out for an old boat or other small trailer of some kind that is for sale. They show up quite regularly on KSL, classified ads, etc, and are usually only around $100. It would save you hours of work, too. You don't need anything fancy, or even a perfect fit, for a boat that size. Just something that will haul it.

Windknot, you refered to Harbor freight and transform one of theirs. Were you talking about boat trailers or axles?

Habor freight has two different types of trailers, one is made for boats and cost $299.00 the last time I checked. They also have the fold up type that were $199.00 or so. WH2

Mr. Zilla,
Do you mean Hendersons on 700 west and around 13th south or so...the ones with the big tire man looking thing out front made of old wheel rims and such all painted blue and yellow? Or is there another Hendersons I should know about in the sl valley? If thats the case my family has done buisness with them since they opened and I think the henderson boys worked with/for my family some time before they conjured up their store....hhmm...I never thought those guys would do something like that....huh. Thanks for the tip.
