Koke Notes
#1
Here are my notes from the Shasta Tackle Company Demo at Sportsman’s Warehouse. Jared and Mark Johnson were the main speakers.

Graphite Rods: 7’ Shasta medium action rod.
Reels: Shimano or Daiwa level wind.
Line: Florocarbon type lines such as Kuda rated at 10 pounds.

Six basic lures were discussed. Troll them using a single or double sling blade dodger at the speeds indicated.

NAME LEADER LENGHTH TROLL SPEED
Humdinger 30” 2.2-2.3 MPH
Squid 12” (use 15# Test line) 1.5-2.5 MPH
Krippler 24” 1.2-1.6 MPH
Apex or Echip 24” (pink colors) 1.5-2.3 MPH
Osprey 30” (pink colors) 2.2-2.3 MPH
Tazmanian Devils 30” 1.5-2.2 MPH

Color selection depends on depth. For depths in the 10’ to 40’ range use lures with red, pink and silver bodies. For depths of 50’ to 95’ use lures with blue, green and black colors. Time of day and sunlight conditions will factor into color selection but this is a good starting point.

Scents are used on lures to help attract fish. His favorite was Herring but others included: Corn, Krill, Predator, Carp Spit, Kokanee Special and Garlic. Each has its own application and may be used in combination with one another.

Stacking lures was discussed as a way to increase your success. The lure coming off the downrigger ball should be 60-80’ behind it. The lure coming off the Shuttlehawk or top stack should be 90-110’ behind it. You will get tangled up at times but chances are less with the top stack being the longer of the two. The separation of the two stacks should be at least 15’. This is only a starting point, the depth of the ball and time of day should be considered as well. If you troll shallow in the morning try going deeper as the day progresses and remember to not troll into the sun. Last point to remember is to be flexible and experiment with speeds, depths and techniques. Hope this helps. Thanks again to Jared, his father Mark and Sportsman’s Warehouse for sponsoring this event.
