If the manufacturer is not listed a request for information was not requested. I had asked all of them the following in May of 2006:[/green]
[green]I want to know whether or not all your wading shoes and waders will survive repeated soaking in any or all of the following solutions.

Bleach - 10 - 20% in water - 10 minutes soak. (whirling disease)
Copper Sulfate - 3/4 of teaspoon per gallon of water - 5 minutes
Commercial Solutions Formula 409 Cleaner Degreaser Disinfectant (Clorox Corp. - available at Home Depot, Lowes) - 50% in water - 10 minutes.
Formula 409 All Purpose Cleaner Antibacterial Kitchen Lemon Fresh - 50% in water - 10 minute soak
Sparquat 256 (a Quaternary ammonium formulation with low pH) by Spartan Chemical Corporation - 6 oz per gallon of water. 10 minute soak.
Benzethonium Chloride (pure) 7.34 grams/gallon of water. Five minute soak.

[/green][green]Sparquat 256 was not part of the CA DFG testing. It is a product the Colorado DOW has been using for years to sanitize their wading equipment and other equipment after exposure to Whirling Disease. (This is a quaternary ammonium compound cleaner)

Several organizations are now recommending fisherman not to use felt soles due to the ease that nuisanse species can get trapped in the felt and the felt is hard to adequately sanitize and rinse disinfectant back out.
For invasive species cleaning consideration Korkers recommends using their removable rubber base cleated soles.

The following notes are from the CA DFG Testing Report:
The report does not specify what brands / models of waders were tested.
Commercial Solutions Formula 409® Cleaner Degreaser Disinfectant: -" Cracking of the Rubber toe portion of the boots was observed. The cracking was similar to that observed for the boots exposed to the Pine-Sol solution. This cracking appeared to be surficial and did not appear to have compromised the integrity of the boots. Water did not continue to bead up on the exterior of the waders. However, they did not develop any leaks." Determined to be safe for wading equipment.

"Copper Sulfate (252 mg/L Cu) -" There were no observed changes in wading gear exposed to the copper sulfate solution. The fabric of the waders and the boots did not appear to have become stiff or brittle. Cracks were not observed in any of the rubber on the wader boots. There were no observable stains present on the outside or the inside of the waders. The waders did not develop any detectable Leaks. Water Continued to bead on the surface of the waders unlike those exposed to the benzethonium chloride, Pine-Sol® or Formula 409® Disinfectant Solutions." Determined to be safe for wading equipment.

"Benzethonium Chloride -" The only observed changes in the wading gear exposed to benzethonium chloride were minor, surficial cracking of the rubber toe guard of the boots similar to that observed with Formula 409® Disinfectant and a lost of surface water repellence ( beading of water) on the legs of the waders similar to that observed for Formula 409® Disinfectant. Waders exposed to benzethonium chloride did not develop any leaks. The Fabric in the waders or the boots did not appear to lose any flexibility." Determined to be safe for wading equipment. (This is a quaternary ammonium compound cleaner as is Sparquat 256)
Pine-Sol failed the test.
[/green][green]Salt & Water (1% solution for 24 hours) and Vinegar (100% vinegar for 20 minutes) were not asked about in the request to manufacturers. These two solutions are general cleaning methods recommended by the national "Protect Your Waters" campaign

*1 - Bleach may caused some discoloration of material over time. 100% bleach can severely affect waders. Bleach will not kill all NZMS but is effective for Whirling Disease and many other invasive plants and other organisms
*2 - These manufacturers listed individual models instead of providing a generalized response.
[/green] [green]The above information has been interpreted from information provided by the manufacturer of the equipment.[/green][green]Links to Sources of Information [/green][green]Waders and Wading Boots spread both the TAMS and myoxspore life stages of Whirling Disease ( this is a PDF file that may take a while to load). [green]Hi there Scuffy_Fly - Since this is an important subject decided that it should have its' own post. Here is a link that you requested. What got me started on this exploration was what effect would different sanitizers have on my waders. At $425 a pair didn't want to take any chances.[/green]

[green]The only Formula 409® Product tested for effectiveness last year by the California DFG to kill NZ Mudsnails and be safe for boots and waders is

[/green][green]"Commercial Solutions Formula 409® Cleaner Degreaser Disinfectant"

The California DFG sent me a picture of the bottle

The above product may or may not have been recently discontinued by the manufacturer (get both answers from Clorox) but it can be found in some stores. Not grocery stores. The only other Formula 409 product with disinfectant in it is:

"Formula 409® All Purpose Cleaner Antibacterial Kitchen Lemon Fresh"
[/green]
[green]available in many locations
Most Formula 409 products do not have a disinfectant / antibacterial in it. The disinfectant or antibacterial is what will kill the snails.

Fly Rods info above are cuts and pastes from the following webpage or linked subpages of it.

www.westdenvertu.org/snails.htm

This page defines sanitizing protocols and sanitizing solutions proven to Kill New Zealand Mudsnails by either the California Department Fish and Game or the Colorado Department of Wildlife.
The Qauternary Ammonium Compounds (QACs) listed on the web page have also been proven to kill both life cylces of Whirling Disease. The two specified Formula 409 products also contain a QAC which will kill NSMS and whirling disease. (the Clorox MSDS page lists over 20 formula 409 products)

Part of the page in my previous post addressed New Zealand Mudsnails mostly.

To learn more about Whirling Disease and Didymo see this page

What had started this thread was:

When discussing wading boots I had said that a number of organizations where now starting to discourage the use of felt soles on wading boats and encouraging the use of other alternative soles that are not as porous.
1) Microscopic scope pests and diseases like Whirling disease and Didymo can easily get imbedded in the fiber layers of the felt soles and thus becoming very hard to clean off equipment.
2) The same is true for New Zealand mudsnails which can be no bigger than a grain of pepper.
3) Cleaning solutions soak into felt soles and then can be hard to rinse back out of them. Some people have fears that lots of fisherman will be then taking these harmful solutions back to the water causing harm in the rivers.

Be sure to rinse your equipment thoroughly.

[green]I doubt very much that a little cleaning solution left in a felt sole [after rinsing] will have any enviormental effect on the surrounding water.[/green]
