Tubin Two Lakes in Utah
#1
[cool][black][#0000ff]Let a little wind and weather change my plans from hitting DMAD and Pruess Lake. Plan B was Deer Creek.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]TubeBabe and I launched at the island about 6:30. She whacked the first of several small smallmouths within a few minutes of launch. We both caught quite a few bitty bass but nothing over about 13 inches. No perch and no trout. We did catch a few pugnacious little green sunfish when casting small plastics into the rocks from our tubes.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We fished completely around the island, throwing a wide variety of hardbaits, plastics, jigs and spinners. I hooked one large fish (trout???) in the shallows between the island and the main shore. Zinged a few yards of line off the drag before arranging an early release. I have taken some nice browns in there about this time of year so I am holding out for a brown. Of course, any fish you lose can be whatever you want it to be...and as big as you want it.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Saw a half dozen [green]boats[/green] trolling for trout. Saw several netted. Most of the success seemed to be over along the north shoreline below the Heber Creeper tracks. Didn't seem to be anybody working the flats for eyes.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Shortly after 10 we made the executive decision to take our tubes out and run up to Jordanelle. The wind had been pretty calm and we were hoping to get in some time on Lake X before the anticipated breezes kicked up. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The PWC ramp faces south and there was already some popcorn forming on the water coming in to that shore. So, we launched at the main ramp (Hailstone) a little after ll AM and the wind immediately started building. I had visions of my last time launching from the main ramp when Hurricane Katrina almost slammed me against the shoreline across from the ramp.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]To avoid the wind in our tubes, we kinda tucked in close to shore and pitched small plastics from shallow to deep. Turned out to be a good way to finish our day. TubeBabe got 4 more smallies, all about 14". Either that or she landed the same one 4 times. I got several more, including one nasty 18"er that gave me a pretty jump. We were both using light rods, 4# line and small tube jigs so we had lots of fun on those bronze battlers. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water temp was about the same on both lakes...63 degrees. I am guessing that a bit more warming and the smallies will get a lot more active. We were getting bit in about 6 to 8 feet of water. Most of the hits were "pop on the drop" and the jigs slowly sank to the bottom. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As we got out of Jordanelle, about 2 PM, the clouds and wind were building and there were some water drops on the windshield. Coulda been a lot worse. Has been a lot worse. Not bad for a plan B...and C.[/#0000ff] [/black] Attachments: [black][Image: image.gif][#333366] TIMP GLASS.JPG [/#333366](140 KB) [/black] [black][Image: image.gif][#333366] FULL DEER CREEK.JPG [/#333366](218 KB) [/black] [black][Image: image.gif][#333366] DC SMALLETTE.JPG [/#333366](119 KB) [/black] [black][Image: image.gif][#333366] PURTY GREENIE.JPG [/#333366](167 KB) [/black] [black][Image: image.gif][#333366] LAKE X LAUNCH.JPG [/#333366](152 KB) [/black] [black][Image: image.gif][#333366] ULTRALIGHT 18.JPG [/#333366](180 KB) [/black] [black][Image: image.gif][#333366] FUNKY 14.JPG [/#333366](191 KB) [/black] [black][Image: image.gif][#333366] LAKE X LOVELY.JPG [/#333366](165 KB) [/black] [black][Image: image.gif][#333366] LIL REDEYE.JPG [/#333366](184 KB) [/black]

Loved the report. Thanks for sharing. Those smallmouths are fun to catch. That 18 incher was a nice one.

Wind is nearly always a problem where I fish, too. Often helps to have some water on the calm side of something in order to keep fish-ing.

Nice pics, too. You need to get Tubebabe a camera, too, so's she can take some pics of the Dude of the Tube.

Nice to have someone actually catching some fish. I've been up to my ears in work so fish-ing is just a fond memory at the moment. I hope to solve that issue soon.

[#0000ff]TubeBabe and I have had identical Olympus digitals for about 3 years. Sometimes she takes her camera with her but she never takes pictures. The only shots of me to appear on this board are ones I have coerced her into taking with my camera...usually after we are back on shore. No action shots.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have always had a special fondness for those smallies. They really fight hard for their size. In fact, one of the well known old time fishermen (I forget who) once said of the smallmouth: "Inch for inch and pound for pound, the gamest fish that swims."[/#0000ff]

The fish with the red eye, is that a rock bass or similar to the rock bass we have here in the east?

[#0000ff]Nope. That is a small smallmouth bass. Some members of the species have more of a red eye than others. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Smallmouth bass are members of the sunfish family, just like the rock bass. But, so is the largemouth bass and it never seems to have the red eyes. I guess they do not stay up as late or live the wild life like some of the others do. Maybe it's allergies.[/#0000ff]

Tube

I love smallmouth hence the "handle". It was James Henshall who made that quote.
