Fishing Report January, 2003
The lake level is 354.1 and water temperatures are 38 to 44 degrees, Crappie fishing has been relatively slow for most crappie anglers on KY Lake but there have been some scattered fish taken. Several warm days this month have caused the fishing fever to rise for a few winter crappie anglers. Some crappie are being taken on manmade stake beds and brush piles in 9 to 13 foot zones in the Big Sandy areas around Mansard Island. Down near the mouth of Big Sandy and in the Paris Landing area anglers were finding crappie somewhat deeper along the main lake ledges in 18 to 24 foot zones. The deep sides of the sandbars where structure can be found is the typical winter pattern for crappie in the Paris Landing area while other bays and zones of the lake may see fish move into large bays or flats in shallow areas. Live minnows were producing but TeeZur jigs tipped with Berkley nibbles were also working well. Such colors as chartreuse and purple, red and chartreuse, and some lime with red glitter skirts will produce finicky crappie. Best baits for the week was TeeZur Hot Head Orange with green eyes, Skirt is Chartreuse with red Flake. For more info on TeeZur jigs, or crappie nibbles, send me an email. The woods are still full of hunters till January 26, 2003 so get out and enjoy the lake. Also there are opening dates for March and April. if anyone needs a guide trip.
God bless and good fishing to you all.

Tips January: Learning the biology of the Crappie species is essential in determining areas to concentrate your effort as relates to factors such as water temperature, water clarity, time of year, and weather conditions. 2. Studying good quality topographic maps and locating areas of potential success before you get on the water is very helpful. Don't Give Up Until You Locate Those Predetermined Areas. Recommendation -- Hot spot fishing maps or US Army Corps of Engineers. 3. Locating break lines such as underwater creek channel ledges with an abrupt change in depth are typically very productive areas for catching Crappie throughout the year.
