[font "Poor Richard"][green][size 3]Located 235 miles north of Sacramento, the McCloud River emerges from glacial springs around Mt. Shasta and flows nearly 50 miles through deep, forested canyons before emptying into Lake Shasta. Along the way the river absorbs glacial "flour" or dust from nearby volcanic mountains giving it a distinctive jade-green hue. [/size][/green][/font]
[font "Poor Richard"][green][size 3]Its famous series of falls - the prosaically-named Upper, Middle and Lower Falls -- draw hikers, birders and kayakers from around the world and, by isolating fish populations, helped endow the McCloud with its distinctive fish fauna including unique redbands and world-famous rainbows. The latter has made the McCloud a popular fishing destination as well. The gorgeous and aggressive McCloud River Rainbow is so well-regarded that its ancestors were cultivated and planted world-wide over a century ago. Rainbow trout from all over the globe today -- in New Zealand, Argentina, Britain and across the US are the descendents of the original McCloud River fish.[/size][/green][/font]
[font "Poor Richard"][green][size 3]Besides spectacular waterfalls, terrific fishing and unparalleled natural beauty, the McCloud River offers some of the finest water in the state. But, ironically, the river's cold, clear flows have muddied its future as international bottlers like Nestle move in to profit from the McCloud's high water quality.[/size][/green][/font]
