State’s Comprehensive Wildlife Strategy approved by Feds
#1
Indiana’s Comprehensive Wildlife Strategy (CWS) has been approved by the U.S. Congress, allowing the state to receive federal conservation funds.

Each state is required to develop and submit such a plan to be eligible for these funds. Indiana’s proposed strategy was approved by a national team led by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that also included state and national conservation organization representatives.

Indiana‘s CWS, which was developed by the DNR Division of Fish and Wildlife, promotes directed actions aimed toward conserving identified types of wildlife before they become more rare and costly to protect.

The state’s strategy was developed by the combined effort of scientists, conservationists, sportsmen, and members of the community. The next step, known as the CWS-Action Plan, will document how Indiana’s CWS is implemented. The same constituent groups will contribute to making the CWS-Action Plan work.

“This plan ensures that Hoosiers will be able to preserve the wildlife and natural places that bring peace and relaxation to our busy lives and that are so important to many of our state’s family traditions,” said DNR Director Kyle Hupfer. “As our communities grow, our CWS-Action Plan will help us keep pace with development and fulfill our responsibilities to conserve these resources for future generations.”
The health of wildlife is often an early indicator of disease and pollution that potentially could affect humans, so investing in Indiana’s CWS-Action Plan will protect clean water and lands, making both wildlife and people healthier. Tasks carried out under the CWS-Action Plan will help identify conservation challenges while they’re still manageable and prevent other wildlife issues from developing.

The Division of Fish and Wildlife invites all Hoosiers to stay tuned for progress. Check the DNR Web site in the coming months as the CWS-Action Plan is employed.
