Lake Manitou hydrilla treatment meeting Oct. 5
#1
The DNR will host a public meeting Oct. 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Rochester City Hall to inform the public on use restrictions on Lake Manitou due to the DNR's on-going hydrilla treatment. The City Hall is located at the corner of Main Street and 3rd Street. All interested parties are encouraged to attend.

The DNR is currently taking steps to limit watercraft use on Lake Manitou in conjunction with treatments to eradicate the exotic, highly invasive aquatic plant hydrilla. DNR Director Kyle Hupfer has signed a temporary rule which gives DNR the authority to quarantine the lake and control access.

The rule will go into effect once it has passed through the Legal Services Agency process and gone before the Secretary of State. This process could take up to four days. Information regarding the status of the rule and the details of user restrictions will be available during the meeting.

Lake Manitou is the only known location of hydrilla in Indiana and the Midwest; it is classified as a federal noxious aquatic weed. Its presence in Manitou was confirmed in late August.

Hydrilla fragments can be easily be transferred by watercraft. This is the most likely means of its introduction into Lake Manitou. Strict use restrictions will prevent the spread of hydrilla to other waters.
