You may want to try the Rigid strip apron like TubeDude uses. Then you can mount a decent ruler on it and always have a more accurate measure on your fish.
If the judges can see the entire fish and the measuring device clearly, it is easier to confirm ones declaration of the fish size.
If you do need help with a rod holder, there is a selection in the "Best of the Best" thread on the Tubing board. There are several selections to choose from or you may look at all of them and then design something totally different. It's all good.[cool]
