DEP Offers Free Fishing Courses
#1
The DEP's Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education (CARE) program literally wants No Child Left Inside this spring. While biologists are busy stocking nearly a half-million trout throughout the state, CARE Instructors are busy teaching Connecticut families how to catch the trout. To find an already scheduled course in your area please visit the DEP website at www.ct.gov/dep (enter CARE in the search box) or call the Inland Fisheries Division at (860) 424- FISH.

"CARE family fishing courses provide the skills and information that beginners need to get started, and they are fun for both adults and children" said DEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy. "Spring is here. It's time to get off your couch, turn off your TV, unplug your children from their computers and video games, and go outside and enjoy the great outdoors. With the kick-off to this year's Great Park Pursuit being a family fishing event at Beardsley Park in Bridgeport on May 12th, enrolling in a CARE course will give you the skills you need to catch the biggest fish in the pond. One big fish and we'll have you hooked on nature in no time!"

Many CARE courses have already been scheduled in the coming weeks. Since 1986 CARE instructors have taught over 115,000 citizens about water, fish and fishing through free classes and outdoor workshops. CARE instructors, who are volunteers themselves, foster a sense of resource stewardship, promote an understanding of aquatic ecosystems and fishery management decisions, and encourage both an understanding and utilization of aquatic resources.
