I'm assuming you mean a 25 pound reel. I'd recommend the Progear 251 for 25 pound service. I use one on a Seeker 970 for my Albacore setup and it works terrific. The 251 has 3/0 sized drags, 5:1 ratio, class 5 bearings, good free spool for casting chovies, very strong 1 piece machined aluminum frame, yada yada yada. Dan is the Progear you speak of made by "Progear" or someone else?

I ask this because we are starting to get OS visitors like Neil from the West Indies, Pete from Thailand, who are also looking for a good reel to deal with HD Cubera Snapper, Kingfish, GT's and other heavy hitters.

If you have a link then that would be great. They might be able to look at models up from 251 as well and take in the details.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

Yes, Progear Reels are made by Progear here in Southern California. Here's the link http://www.progearfishingreels.com

Dan Butler

Fishing Academy --->http://www.fishingacademy.com

Ok Dan.

Thanks, that's a real useful link...I note they have a decent gear ratio on all of them and a more than decent gear box too.

Not dissimilar in that regard to the "Diawa sealine range" at a quick glance.

Had any problems with them at all?

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

No problems Steve. They're the reels I use for the Fishing Academy and they get quite the use on the school trips (two years now) and I've yet to have a failure. Two screw takedown makes maintenance very easy. Keep 'em clean and maintained and you're good to go. Progear makes tough reels.

Dan

Fishing Academy --->http://www.fishingacademy.com

They seem pretty well priced too.

I was just looking here at BFT under reels and considering the handle type, counter balance and gear box, I think they are well priced.

Might have to try and get one into my hand when I come over for the Fred Hall Show next year. I think the larger model might just be the reel for busting "dog tooth tuna" on the jig as well.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

Hey Steve, way cool.[cool] When you come over be sure to look me up. I llive near the show (about 45 miles) and I can show you around some. I could take you to the Progear factory and I'll introduce you to the owners. [Smile] The Progear's are very well priced indeed for what you get. You coming over next year?

Dan Butler

Fishing Academy --->http://www.fishingacademy.com

No worries Dan.

Yes I am working on coming over for the 2002 Fred Hall Show and to spend some time having a look around at the rest of the tackle scene, have a few beers with people I have got to know, and so on.

Appreciate the offer of having a look around and sure, love to have a look at those Pro-Gear reels up close. That would be great.

More on that as the plans develop.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

Ok on the tour Hara, just let me know. Keep in mind that at show time you can get a much better deal at the show, sometimes as much as 40% off.

The cost of the Jigs Instructional trips is $40 but you get about $20 worth of free stuff like jigs, plastics, leadheads, bait scents, hooks, etc. I'll work with you myself and it takes about one trip to get you going on the right track. It's a fun thing to do, you'd enjoy it. Check the schedule and get on board, you won't regret it.

Dan Butler

Fishing Academy --->http://www.fishingacademy.com

Hara, you don't have to go on just the jig instructional trip. Any trip will get you out on the water and I'm on all trips. We'll have time to get it done. Get on one if you can.

Dan Butler

Fishing Academy --->http://www.fishingacademy.com

Hara

See what you can tee up with Dan about having a look at the factory. I reckon it would be interesting.

In a few weeks time were heading off to fish a small tourny (and have a much needed holiday as well). I will be using the Okuma TI15LW's which appear to have the goods.

Will provide some thoughts on those when we get back in late August just as a general review for anglers who might be interested in their performance.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com
