1 dead, 3 injured in boat accident
by News Channel 8's Tina Detelj(Old Saybrook-WTNH)
_ What began as a fun day on the Connecticut River ended in tragedy in Old Saybrook. News Channel 8 obtained home video that showed the boat spinning out of control after the driver was thrown overboard. The powerboat hit a sailboat with 4-people on board, including a 53-year old woman who died. </P> <P>Boaters say the sailboat cannot maneuver quickly so it did not have much of a chance to avoid this tragic crash. </P> <P>"There's very little they can do if something's coming at them that's why we're supposed to give way the motor boats," said boater Clyde Tyler. </P> <P>Drivers are supposed to wear a safety lanyard attached to the boat's ignition in case something goes wrong. </P> <P>"It's upsetting because he should have had the lanyard on. That would have never happened. No one would have ever gotten hurt and his boat would have stopped dead in the water," said boat Vickie Silvia. </P> <P>After the accident, 44-year old Gregory Siege of Madison was arrested for operating under the influence. The DEP is now examining both boats and will determine if other charges will follow. </P> <P>Sea Tow, a boat towing company, rescued the victims from the water and were able to stop the spinning boat by thrusting a tow line in its propeller. </P> <P>Siege will be in court on July 19th. <BR></P></DIV></FONT>

Saw the home video on the boat this morning. That guy must have been hammered to fall out of that boat while driveing. Even though the channel there gets like 95 with out lines. I was surprised the PD wasn't out in full strength the weekend after.[crazy]

Posted July 16, 20075:35 PM(Haddam-WTNH) _ The DEP has charged 27-year old Nicholas Blaise for failure to keep a proper lookout following a boating accident near Haddam Island on the Connecticut River. Blaise and his 5-passengers were coming from Harbor Park in Middletown and heading to the state boat launch early Sunday morning when their 25-foot vessel struck a sandbar, flipped over and then sank. Nancy Scory of Haddam is familiar with the waters around Haddam Island and says, "You have to know the river to be on the river at night. You have to know your channels and sandbars or you're gonna have a problem."No one was seriously injured and DEP Officer Bob Zabilansky says that the group was lucky to be in a shallow area of the river when the accident happened. "They were in the water for some time, but it's shallow there so they were able to make it to shore and they called 911 for help. The fire department went out and rescued them," said Zabilansky. F W Smith has been fishing and canoeing on the Connecticut River for years and says it can tricky and treacherous. "I think people don't understand how to follow the channel. They think they can cut inside the island," said Smith. The accident remains under investigation.

I've fished that area and it's shallow on the inside of the island. Drunk again.[crazy] So much for boating class or common sense.
