Heavy rains along the far southern sections of the state have rivers and streams flowing high and fast. For the rest of the state, trout fishing is tough right now as most of the rivers are extremely low and clear. There is no fishable number of kings in any of the rivers at this time.

Southeast Lower Peninsula
Lake Erie - Surface water temperatures have reached 80 degrees. Walleye fishing has been slow to fair as strong winds may have the fish scattered. Good spots to try would be Stony Point and out near the E-Buoy. Crawler harnesses or Hot-n-Tots are still the ticket. Jumbo perch are still being taken in Canadian waters however anglers have also caught fish out near the Toledo Light, the Sputnik and out in front of the Metro Beach Marina in 12 feet of water.
Huron River - Look for steelhead in the deeper holes between the Flat Rock Dam and the Rockwood Dam.
Detroit River - May be muddy from recent rains. Walleye fishing has slowed however some fish were caught in the lower end of the river near the mouth. Those handlining in the Trenton Channel after dark have also caught walleye.
St. Clair River - Walleye have been caught on the north end of the river from St. Clair to Port Huron and beyond when slow trolling, drifting or handlining.
Lexington - Perch are still being taken from various weedbeds.
Port Sanilac - Boats trolling in 20 to 40 feet of water have caught perch.
Harbor Beach - Angler interest is picking up here, with walleyes being taken from 30 to 40 feet of water when using crawler harnesses. Boat anglers are catching perch inside the harbor.
Port Austin - Lake trout are coming from 80 to 130 feet of water. Walleye have been caught off the Hat Reef and straight out from the port when fishing in 15 to 20 feet of water.
Saginaw Bay - Walleye hot spots have been around both the inner and outer Spark Plug Buoys, which would be Buoys 1 & 2 and Buoys 11 & 12. Crawler harnesses worked best followed by crankbaits and spoons. Chrome color patterns on crankbaits are producing well. Walleye have also been caught along the weedbeds near Linwood and the Pinconning Bar, in the 10 to 15 feet of water in the Slot off Fish Point and outside the Islands.
Saginaw River - Shore anglers have caught bass and catfish.
Tittabawassee River - Is providing some good bass and catfish action.
Southwest Lower Peninsula
St. Joseph - Boat anglers are catching mostly chinook salmon 30 to 50 feet down in waters 60 to 90 feet deep. Lots of limit catches were reported, and some big fish have been caught on spoons, dodgers and flies. Anglers need to get out there early, as the bite seems to shut down between 7:30 and 8:00am. Perch fishing has been good during the afternoon and evening hours.
St. Joseph River - Was not fishable at the time of this report. Extremely heavy rains in this part of the state have caused high water levels. If the river clears up by the weekend, fishing should be good for smallmouth bass and catfish.
South Haven - Boat anglers are doing well when trolling in waters 100 to 120 feet deep. Perch have been caught in 30 to 40 feet of water about a mile and a half south of the piers.
Kalamazoo River - Walleye fishing has slowed with only light numbers of fish taken from the deeper holes up near the Allegan Dam. Bass, channel cats and crappie have also been caught.
Grand Haven - Salmon are being caught 40 to 180 feet down in waters 80 to 200 feet deep. All colors are working however blues and greens worked best in the morning and bright green in the afternoon. Catfish and freshwater drum have been caught off the pier.
Grand River at Grand Rapids - Walleye fishing has been good in the lower river below the coffer dams. Anglers are reporting excellent catfish action when fishing the lower holes in the middle of the day. Millennium Park has good bass action.
Rogue River - Brown trout are still being caught. With the lower water levels, try drifting worms over the deeper holes.
Grand River at Lansing - Some nice bluegills have been caught near the Moore's Park Dam. Catfish action has been very good near the Moore's Park Dam and the North Lansing Dam. Bass and crappie have also been caught.
Jordan Lake - Located near Lake Odessa, is reporting fair to good crappie action with some nice fish taken on minnows.
Muskegon - Boat anglers have caught chinook and steelhead when trolling 40 to 75 feet down in waters 80 to 170 feet deep. Spoons and J-Plugs worked best. Try blue and green in the morning and bright green in the afternoon. Freshwater drum and catfish were caught off the pier.
Northeast Lower Peninsula
Rogers City - The waters have turned over which means the fish can be found shallow in the early morning between 3:00 and 7:00am, but as soon as the sun comes up the fish are moving out to deeper waters. Though fishing slowed, anglers took chinook, lake trout, steelhead and the occasional brown trout or walleye. Despite fewer fish in the box, those caught have been large fish. Fish waters 45 to 70 feet deep in the early morning while using any lure that glows. Hot spots continue to be the State Park, Adams Point, Swan Bay and north towards the Pump House.
Presque Isle - Anglers will want to get out early and fish straight out or north of the harbor in waters 45 to 70 feet deep.
Rockport - Trout and salmon action has been spotty. Those fishing around the island have caught fish right off the bottom in 90 feet of water. Walleye were caught around the island and in the harbor in 45 feet of water. Purple was the hot color.
Alpena - Had slower catch rates for trout and salmon. Walleye action on the lake was fair when night fishing in front of the harbor in 20 to 30 feet of water.
Thunder Bay River - Some bass were caught behind the Boys and Girls Club and on the left side of the new bridge. Some large catfish have also been caught. Both were taken on worms when fishing off the bottom.
Harrisville - Lake trout have been caught on spoons fished near the bottom in waters 75 to 110 feet deep. Some fish were suspended 50 to 60 feet down. The better salmon fishing has been to the north where a few walleye were also caught.
Van Etten Lake - Perch and bass have been caught along the weedbeds.
Oscoda - Lake trout are still the main catch but not many limits have come in. Anglers are trolling spoons straight out from the piers and to the north in waters up to 110 feet deep. Pier anglers are catching smallmouth bass.
Tawas - Walleye fishing has picked with some 3 to 5 pound fish taken in 35 to 55 feet of water out past Buoy 2 and around the artificial reef inside the Bay. Pier anglers have caught small perch in the early morning along with smallmouth bass and rock bass.
Au Gres - Continues to have good walleye fishing out near the Charity Islands and south in 35 feet of water.
Higgins Lake - Lake trout are still hitting near the bottom in 80 to 100 feet of water. Smallmouth bass fishing has been very good when using crawlers and leeches in waters 30 feet deep. A few perch measuring 8 and 9 inches have been caught along with lots of rock bass.
Houghton Lake - Warm weather has the fish in waters 8 to 12 feet deep. Those fishing the weedbeds or along the edges have caught perch, bluegills, bass, walleye, pike and crappie.
Northwest Lower Peninsula
Petoskey - Anglers have caught steelhead and some legal lake trout when trolling for salmon 55 to 60 feet down in waters over 100 feet deep. Spoons in green, blue, silver and anything that glows along with dodgers and flies have caught fish. Pier anglers caught smallmouth bass on live bait.
Walloon Lake - Walleye are still biting in waters 12 to 40 feet deep. Anglers are trolling crawler harnesses, rapalas or Hot-n-Tots. A couple rainbow trout were caught using downriggers in deeper waters. Bass fishing was slow, but those casting shallow diving crankbaits over the weedbeds did catch fish. The perch are small.
Charlevoix - The salmon are scattered and are being caught 50 to 65 feet down in waters over 100 feet deep. Steelhead and lake trout have also been caught. Good colors have been blue, green, silver or anything that glows. Bass, perch and a few walleye have been caught in the channel.
Lake Charlevoix - A few perch have been caught but the action was slow. Some nice smallmouth bass were taken recently.
Thumb Lake (Lake Louise) - Splake were caught when jigging spawn during the morning and early afternoon in 50 to 60 feet of water near the church camp and the county beach. For bass, anglers are casting tubes, spinners and crawlers in 10 to 25 feet of water. Perch have been caught near the public access site when fishing the large patch of vegetation.
Frankfort - Salmon fishing has been pretty good. Although the salmon are running a little smaller, good numbers are being caught in waters 60 to 120 feet deep. Good colors have been blue, green and anything that glows. Pier fishing has been slow.
Manistee - Boats trolling in 70 to 120 feet of water have caught mainly chinook with a few coho and steelhead mixed in. Most are trolling with J-Plugs or spoons. Good colors have been blue, green and anything that glows. Pier anglers have caught smallmouth bass and panfish.

Upper Peninsula
West Portage Lake - Walleye fishing picked up with some nice fish taken in Pike Bay, on the Humps between the Sturgeon River and Chassell, between Grosse Point and Dollar Bay, and between the two red buoys off the Bootjack. Trolling planer boards with crankbaits or crawler harnesses worked best, but fish were also caught when using jigs with half a crawler or when drifting crawler harnesses. Pike and bass were taken between Chassell and Pilgrim.
Torch Lake - In Houghton County has good walleye fishing in the early morning or late evening when trolling a little faster than normal with crawler harnesses that have bigger blades. Casting stickbaits over the weedbeds at night also caught fish. Good smallmouth bass fishing during the day light hours.
Hagerman Lake - Has good smallmouth bass fishing.
Menominee River - Has good smallmouth bass fishing.
Little Bay de Noc - Fair to good catches of walleye were taken when trolling or drifting crawlers in 18 to 20 feet of water near Kipling. Several are trolling or jigging in 14 to 25 feet of water along the drop off just south of Portage Point. Mixed reports were coming from the Black Bottom. Shore anglers fishing in the evening reported good catches of walleye off the new piers in Gladstone. Several nice perch were caught around Butler Island when jigging crawlers in 10 to 24 feet of water. Good bass fishing at the head of the Bay. Rumor has it some salmon were taken 40 to 60 feet down in waters 80 feet deep out by the Ford River Can.
Big Bay de Noc - For walleye, anglers were trolling crawlers in 20 to 30 feet of water off Ansels Point or drifting crawlers in 14 feet of water near Ogontz. Anglers are reminded to watch for rocky shoals and emerging rocks when boating on the river.

I'm hoping to get out this weekend and sling some flies. We'll see, though... b/w having company up North.... and going to the field trial in Merideth... the ol' fly rod may have to sit yet another weekend.
