"setting the hook"
#1
I am new to fishing, and here's my problem. I can feel the fish going after my bait and my line is "tugging", and I know that at some point I am supposed to "set the hook", but so far I can't seem to do it. I have thus far only been able to catch bass-because they pretty much hook themselves-but being female, I had some difficulty with them and I'd like to catch other fish as well. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hi Ninsk and welcome to the board.

In my (professional pro guiding experience) women are often better at feeling the bite of fish. So even though it is early days for you in terms of angling experience, the trick is to hit the fish (set the hook) hard when you feel they have got past "muckin around" stage with your bait.

Other species don't muck around at all, so you have to be on the ball at hit them at the first chance. Give it a go by just keeping a little bit of slack in your line. Just enough to let them take the bait.

If they are biting serious, or with intent, then don't be afraid to pull up hard on your rod to set the hook. Imagine this is the last meal your going to have if you don't hook this fish.

I mentioned the same approach to Dale and the big muskie that has been giving him and his mate "the big run around"!

In other words, get some attitude into your angling and get that fish hooked up! Then if you get a few keepers for the pan, let the rest go.

Let us know how you get on next time out.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

G'day Ninsk

How did you get on with the "hook setting issue"?. I am interested to know because I am sure many other anglers wonder about that too.

I look forward to hearing how you got on.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com
