Drag Setting?
#1
Setting the proper drag for your reel is very important when you go fishing for bigger fishes. Everyone knows it, including me. For most amateur anglers, the basic drag setting is 1/3 of the poundage of the fishing line. I also use this guide for the setting of drags for my reels.

My question and confusion is, how do I know the maximum limit to set the drag for my reels? Most manufacturer of reels doesn't state the maximum drag setting for its reel in the manual. So for eg, if I use 80lbs line my drag setting at 1/3 is probably at 26lbs. How will I know if the reel is able to cope with such high drag setting?

I've a Penn 6500SS, Shimano TSS4, Shimano TLD 30II, Abu 9500 and Accurate TDR 6. I'm thinking of using a 50-80lbs line for all the reels. Can I set the drag at 16-26lbs for all the reels? Can someone pls help me on the above questions or maybe just advise me on the limit of setting the drags for my above mentioned reels. Thks.

Pete.

Pete the other point I would add is to make sure that your drag washers etc. are relatively new before testing drag settings so that you know exactly what those settings look and feel like as well.

No point if testing on reels that have drags that have caught a heap of fish first. It will give you a false indication.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com
