LANSING, Mich. -- Hunting and fishing license fees won't go up this budget year under a tentative agreement announced Friday by a state lawmaker and confirmed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm's administration.

Neither will environmental permit fees paid by businesses.

The hunting and fishing fee increases will be avoided by using extra money elsewhere in the state budget to fund shortfalls in the Game and Fish Fund, said House Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources Chairman Joel Sheltrown, D-West Branch.

The Department of Natural Resources today reminded holiday shoppers that 2008 state park Motor Vehicle Permits and Boating Access Site permits are now available to purchase for the recreation and boating enthusiast on your gift list.

Michigan State Park Gift Certificates also are available, and can be redeemed towards a permit, camping or other state park or recreation area related items throughout the year.
"Most Michigan residents are located within a one-hour drive of a state park, recreation area or boating access site.

The permits provide Michigan residents with access to numerous state parks and recreation areas or boating access sites located statewide," said Ron Olson, DNR Parks and Recreation chief. "Giving a motor vehicle permit, a boating access site permit, or a gift certificate is giving the gift of outdoors, and it also helps support our state park system."

Permits and gift certificates can be purchased online through the [#000000]Michigan e-store[/#000000] at www.michigan.gov/dnr. All state park and recreation areas should have the 2008 permits available on or after Dec. 1.

Please contact a state park or recreation area near you to determine their hours and availability. More information about state parks and recreation areas is available online on the DNR's Web site under the [#000000]Recreation and Camping[/#000000] section.

Senior discount permits can only be purchased in person at a state park or recreation area, or at the DNR's main offices in downtown Lansing.

Gift certificates can only be purchased online or by calling (517) 373-9900.

For your winter camping adventure, 10 state parks or recreation areas are open for camping year-round. Mitchell, Traverse City and Rifle River all have heated restrooms available throughout the winter. Waterloo-Portage Lake, Bay City, North Higgins Lake, Ludington, Fort Custer, Algonac and Tahquamenon Falls all keep their campgrounds open year-round, offering semi-modern (electricity available) campsites.

Many parks also have cabins available to rent all year. Most cabins are rustic, but all are heated with wood stoves or propane.

Three locations -- Craig Lake, Pinckney, and Porcupine Mountains -- have yurts available for camping as well.
Reservations can be made online at [#000000]www.midnrreservations.com[/#000000] or by calling (800) 44-PARKS.
