They look like nice toys or even good gear for the very sporty panfish. Don't plan on anything big with those without causing some kind of damage to the equipment.

The should be OK for the collection or emergency stop by a river on the way home from work or where ever.[cool]

I have been eyeballing these for about six months...

I think idealy these would be great for ice fishing, I would not use them any where else... other than in a servival kit where size and weight is a concern...

If I were to buy a new ice fishing rod, this would be it... either reel would be exceptable..

I am a big fan of telocoping rods.. tho I only have 4. I have had them year after year for 30 years...

wished they would send me one to test....[Tongue] I would test it for them every day during ice season...

I would be ticked if I bought it and found that rod couldnt handle a fish under 10 pounds... I dont mean it has to lift a 10 pound bowling ball...[Tongue]

the fish in their adds are just about that, a pound and a half to two pounds..

Consider the Daiwa® MiniSpin Ultralight Travel System Rod and Reel. It's about 39.99 at basspro.

5 piece rod and a quality ultra light spinning reel. This actually fits in a suitcase or backpack. Pretty slick. I'm actually thinking about getting one. I have a few ultra lights, but nothing that comes appart in such a small package.

It's rated for 4 pound line, so you could string it up with 10 pound super braid and land some pretty decent sized fish with the proper application of skill and technique.

nice looking product, but for my fishing habits, that system only has three draw backs, it wont fit in to the glove box of my truck, it wont fit in to my tackle box and it wont fit in to my five gallon bucket...[Tongue]

as previously mentoned before, I have several teloscopic rods. what I did not mention is that all of my telosopic rods with thier reels fit in to my tackle box at the same time..

here is two of my teloscopic, the one on the left converts it to a fly rod by reversing the handle. Both rods have landed their share of 15 lb carp over the last 30 years... both will take some pretty small reels, but I doubt if they will take the penlight reel...

both rods are 6'5" when extended...

For me, when it comes to light tackle, there's nothing finer than a spinning reel. Bait casters are limited in the aspect that if the lure you're trying to cast is too light, no dice. With a spinning reel, you can cast a much lighter offering and get pretty decent distance. So, i'd look at what it is you're fishing for and how you'd be fishing for them.

I'm a bait caster man myself, but when it comes to using ultra light lures/baits, nothing is more efficient than a spinning combo. I use ultra light spinning tackle in fresh water, and I use a larget spinning combo with heavier super braid line in saltwater for chunking very light offerings such as a small hook with just a piece of jelly fish on it; or tossing a live bait on a small hook, both of which a bait casting reel just doesn't give me the distance I need.

Before I got my heard set on a bait casting reel, i'd consider what exactly you're trying to accomplish with it. A fly rod is ideal for certain conditions as well, but i've found spinning reels to be more universal.

Yea I never did think about the Light spinning reels that way. I own 2 baitcasters and love them both and like how they feel so thats what I was wanting the baitcaster for the light Rod I might just get both reels. I would like to try the fly fishing reel but I dont know how to fly fish. thanks

Hey Gunship,

Here is an interesting bit about the pen rods...

[url "http://fishingandthinking.blogspot.com/2007/05/my-clock-was-getting-dirty-ill-come.html"]http://fishingandthinking.blogspot.com/2007/05/my-clock-was-getting-dirty-ill-come.html[/url]

They look like a kick in the pants, but I want to get a lot better at using regular sized rod/reels...LOL
