Commercial Oyster Arrest

On 2/7/08, EnCon Police Officers Hey and Samorajczk received a complaint from the Dept. of Aquaculture that two seed oyster boats were taking oysters larger than allowed in the Housatonic River. The officers observed the two oyster boats working in the river and observed their activity until they went to port in Bridgeport Harbor. The officers met both boats at the dock and inspected their catch. Each boat had approximately 130 bushels of oysters on board. An inspection of the oysters revealed that approximately seventy-five percent of the catch was larger than the 2.75 inch maximum size allowed by the licenses issued to them by the Dept. of Aquaculture. The Director of Aquaculture came to the scene to verify license requirements and minimum size of the oysters. The captains of both vessels were issued summons for the violation. The entire oyster catch was returned to the Housatonic River under the supervision of personnel from the Dept. of Aquaculture.

Commercial Fishing Gear Arrest

On 1/7/08, EnCon Police Sgt’s Lundin, and Healy and Officers Esteban and Schneider were on marine fisheries patrol on the 42’ patrol vessel “Guardian” in Long Island Sound in Norwalk. They were inspecting commercial fishing gear to ensure compliance with tagging, licensing and escape vent regulations. During this inspection, they found a trawl of twenty fish pots that did not have the proper escape vents and eleven of the pots were not tagged and numbered as required. The pots were seized and transported to Old Lyme Headquarters for storage. Officer Schneider prepared an arrest warrant for the owner of the pots and served it on February 18th at Sherwood Island State Park. The suspect was processed and released on a promise to appear with a court date of March 6th, 2008.


EASTERN DISTRICT


Narcotics Arrests
On 2/2/08, EnCon Police Officers Dwyer and Johnson were on patrol at Ross Pond State Park in Killingly where they drove into the parking area and observed a vehicle with three occupants. The rear door of the vehicle quickly opened and the female passenger threw an object on the ground, got out of the vehicle and stood on the discarded object. Officer Dwyer asked the juvenile female what she was hiding and she revealed a marijuana cigarette. A subsequent investigation revealed that one 18 year-old male occupant had two bags of marijuana and the other 18 year-old occupant had an open 40 oz. Bottle of beer. All three were charged with Possession of Marijuana and the two men were charged with Risk of Injury to a Minor and one of them was charged with Possession of Alcohol by a Minor.

On 2/9/08, EnCon Police Officer Johnson was on patrol at Quaddick State Park in Thompson where he observed a parked vehicle with three occupants and an unoccupied vehicle nearby. As Officer Johnson walked up to the vehicle an occupant made a quick movement to hide something. Officer Johnson observed green leafy material on the seat near the 24 year-old driver. The driver admitted that he had a small amount of marijuana, which he gave to Officer Johnson. A 30 year-old passenger admitted to possessing a glass pipe, which was being used for smoking marijuana. Both men were charged with narcotics violations.

On 2/17/08, EnCon Police Officer Dwyer was on patrol at Ross Pond State Park in Killingly where he observed a car parked along the entrance road with two male occupants. Officer Dwyer walked by the vehicle and smelled burning chemicals coming from the open window. He also observed a metal spoon coated with residue on the floor of the vehicle. One of the occupants admitted that he had a bag of cocaine in his pocket and that both men had been cooking cocaine for their use. A search of the subjects and vehicle resulted in the seizure of 1.5 grams of cocaine, a glass smoking stem with residue, a metal spoon with residue, a copper wool screen, and three aluminum measuring spoons. The 48 and 43 year-old men were both arrested and charged with Illegal Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Creating a Public Disturbance.

On 2/27/08, EnCon Police Officer Johnson was on patrol at Eagleville Dam Fishing Access Area in Mansfield where he drove into the parking lot and observed two males seated in a parked car. Officer Johnson observed one of the men hide an object in the console area of the vehicle. Officer Johnson walked up to the vehicle and could smell the odor of burning marijuana. His investigation revealed the 16 and 17 year-old teenagers each were in possession of a quantity of marijuana and one of them had hidden a marijuana smoking pipe in the console. Both men were arrested for the illegal drug violations.

Illegal Possession of Wild Turkey

On 2/16/08, EnCon Police Officer Danielson received a complaint from a homeowner that he had observed two pick-up trucks intentionally drive into a flock of wild turkeys on George Heck Road in Union. The complainant located the trucks at a residence on Stickney Hill Road in Union. Officer Danielson and Sgt. Enright proceeded to the address and observed turkey feathers and blood in one of the pick-up trucks. They located two men in the cellar of the house where they were cleaning a wild turkey. The 22 year-old driver of the vehicle was charged with Illegal Possession of a Wild Turkey. While at the residence, the officers observed a pen containing five wild ring neck pheasants. Officer Danielson returned to the residence on February 17th and charged the 51 year-old homeowner with Game Breeding without a License.

Illegal Trapping Arrest

On 2/27/08, EnCon Police Officer Pyznar received a complaint that there were illegal snare traps set on private property in Manchester. Officer Pyznar proceeded to the area and followed a set of footprints in the snow, carefully stepping in the footprints so that he did not leave additional footprints. He found three snares set in the area in addition to a legal beaver trap nearby with a suspects name attached. Officer Pyznar returned to the area on February 28 at 6:00 a.m. and placed a frozen coyote in one of the snares and waited nearby. At 8:00 a.m. a male arrived and tended the trap. Officer Pyznar approached him and the trapper admitted that the snares were his and that he knew that they were illegal. The 61 year-old trapper was charged with 3 counts of Illegal Trapping.


WESTERN DISTRICT


Suicide
On 2/4/08, EnCon Police officers responded to a report of a suicide in Osbornedale State Park in Derby. EnCon Police officers are working with the State Police Major Crime Squad in conducting the investigation.

Reckless Endangerment
[font "&quot"]On 2/9/08, EnCon Police officers received a complaint from Connecticut Light & Power that one of their trucks had been struck by birdshot in Southbury. Sgt Shaw and Officer Buckley responded and determined that the truck had been struck by what appeared to be a high powered rifle. The State Police also responded and along with the EnCon Police determined that the shot had been fired from a house across the street. The subject who was intoxicated and later determined to have fired the shot barricaded himself in his house. The subject eventually surrendered and it was determined that he had a .50BMG caliber sniper rifle that he had fired out of a window of his home. The subject was arrested by the State Police as the incident was not hunting related.[/font] __________________
