What is long range fishing
#1
I'm sure some guys from wherever midwest ,TEXAS, or back east are wondering what the heck is this longe range fishing that these guys take about

All these boats are out the San Diego. They treat and feed you like kings. My first LR trip will be a 5 day on the Royal Star.Book early to make sure you get on a trip.If you want a trip in July or August you better book by december. If you have questions I'm sure someone can help you out or lead you to the right person like someone affilated to the boat

Well here it is.

There are about 10 true long range boats.

What separates these from the others are the quality of the food(five star),experience, along with space, and luxury

I define a long range boat as a boat that do mostly 3 day trips up to 21 days.
The three day trips will land you as far as 250 miles away and as close as 40-50 miles away.It gives that extra time where the overnighter boat have no choice but to fish the 50-100 mile distance even if the bite is 150 miles down. The four days trips are pretty much the same as the 3 but if guadalupe island is hot and nowhere else is they may run even though u may not get you fish all that much.
price=$750-1000

Tackle=
15,20,25,30,40,60,80.Of course if you don't have that you can scratch the 80 and use the boats stuff. Two speeds are nice.Look at the boats websites for more detail. Those are little off.Just post here if you nee help on an outfit.Someone will know

The five day trips will fish at San benitos,Cedros or Guadlupe for big yellows, yellowfin, and they will fish offshore if there is a bite for albacore and bluefin.Guadlupe is famous for the big great white sharks.
price$1100-1400(excel or polaris supreme)

you don't see too many 6 day trips besides skiff trips that run to cedros for bass that bite like crazy. Then they will fish offshore sometimes and go for big yellows when the boat is anchored and you are waiting for a skiff to come in so you can go out.
Price=$1500-1800

The 7 day trips run down to the Alijo Rocks where thor went am I correct?Where there's wahoo, bluefin, yellowfin, misc. bottom fish and yellowtail.
Price= about $1500

I won't go into much more detail than this.Becuase if you are going to try long range you ar better off trying a shorter trip like these before you go on the 14 dayers.

These prices don''t include tip(tip how you would a waiter if not better),permits($15 a day),fish cleaning if you want it done, and bevages.Plus you must furnish your own tackle or rent tackle.

Here are some of the boats website:

http://www.royalstarsportfishing.com
http://www.shogunsportfishing.com
http//:www.excelsportfishing.com
http://www.royalpolaris.com
http://www.qualifier105.com
http://www.angelfire.com/fl/dunnman/spirit.html
http://www.polarissupreme.com

These are just some of the boats.

Edited by hara on 07/27/01 09:05 PM.

That's a great outline Hara.

It has put me in the picture a lot better. What kind of rod lengths (generally) the best to take on one? For most fishing I like around 6ft or 7ft (max).

I have also heard anglers talk a lot about fishing at the "rail"? What does that mean cos I don't have a clue.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

Maybe using the rail.I like using shorter rods like the 6 1/2 -7 ft rods.I wouldn't bring anything bigger than 8.

Dan,

I define LR fishing as a trip over 2 days.

That's a great outline as well Thor.

Thanks for your views on LR fishing and adding to the picture. I have to say that trips like that, be it 2, 3, 4 or 8 days would provide the opportunity to unwind too I am sure, plus leave the city humdrum way behind.

I know that is what I like to do, especially having grown up in the country and liking all things "nature".

I think the Troutman does his share on LR trips as well.

Hara, I noticed above you mentioned up to 21 days on a LR trip. That's a long time on a boat. Do you stop off anywere and get the land legs back again? What do you do when the the boat is steaming to new locations etc?

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

Those type of trips are the fly down fly back but you can ride the boat back to san diego instead of flying out of cabo.

jeff I said anything over 2 days.Do you see any overnight boats do ing any 3 dayers nope.Jus tht efirst string a maybe a few others. That's why I say anoything over 2 days meaning a 3 day trip and up.

Thor thanks for answering what it means.I couldn't figure out what the capt was trying
to say.

Thor,
you are a ho.You carried about 100 outfits for ff01

Even on the two day that I was on I didn't feel the need to get out there everytime there was a hook up or he said chumbline even though I did since I'm a die hard

As for the two speeds.I feel the two speed will make your trip more enjoyable. If you go to orlando you aren't going to go without visitng all the parks that is just part of the expense of a vacation.I'd like to think the same about tackle. If you are going to do it try to make it more enjoyable for yourself. And for other tackle you may as well try a trip first if you like it buy it because you will make another trip.Once I made my first trip I got hooked.Have one two speed and was thinking about a 40# two speed but don't know if I should get it.

As for circle hooks I don't like them.I like to swing on my fish.I will continue to use my live bait hooks. The only fish I use circles on are bluefin due to the fact they have teeth or something they messesthe line up.I tried the owner this trp and they are nice.Going to try some hayabusas an gamakatsus next trip.

as thor mentioned if the bigger fish are around don't play with 20# line and a 9' stick you will get the crap beaten out of you and you will most likely lose the fish.Use a 6-7ft rod with 40#-60# line.
Always bring 20#That is what I got bit on best this last trip and the ablies were very small to 40lbs.

When the boats moving you could be playing cards, eating, sleeping, relaxing, telling fish stories, re-rigging some gear, and just enjoying the ocean.

Long range fishing is the ability to go distances to get fish while not having to rush to make sure you bring home fish and also being able to be on the ocean for a good amount of time being able to tell stories, relax, and fish.Lr fishing is a vacation.A luxurious survior. In nature no newspaper, phones, and stuff in the outside world.Just you , a few people, and the ocean.

Dan is that good enough

OK

Now I am cooking with this Long Range fishing gig. While I know there are a lot of different preferences in terms of hooks, I remain a fan of J hooks. Cone cut, razor sharp and if necessary, a glow in the dark shaft for deep water jigging etc.

As for gear e.g. the number of rods/reels taken I suppose thats down to personal preference as well. Sounds like anglers on these trips could come across almost any type and size of fish.

Do you blokes do any might time jigging or bottom fishing when your out their?

I have heard of a few anglers that do. At the same time I amunsure of whether or not they get on to any decent fish.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com
