Wildlife activity harbingers spring

While snow is still on the ground in parts of the state, spring is afoot in others. Pacific treefrogs can be heard in streams and many species of songbirds are preparing for the upcoming nesting season. On the Summer Lake Wildlife Area near Lakeview in southeastern Oregon, the past week brought a number of changes. Northward migrants such as American wigeon, northern pintail and canvasback have arrived and are increasing in number. Snow geese have returned; about 6,000 were counted last week. Greater sandhill cranes also made their appearance last week. For more information, visit the Southeast Zone Recreation Report.

Goose and rabbit hunting closes; predator hunting continues

Goose hunting continues in the Northwest permit zone through March 2 and EE Wilson rabbit hunting closes Feb. 29. But predator hunting for coyote and cougar continues.
