Spring chinook and trout
#1
Spring chinook fishing opened April 1 in some Northwest zone rivers but expect fishing to be slow at first. The first spring chinook of the season passed Willamette Falls last week (March 27) and springers should be moving into the Willamette system in larger numbers with warmer weather. The best Columbia River spring chinook fishing last week was in the Portland to Longview area, where boat anglers averaged 0.54 spring chinook per boat. Bank angling for spring chinook has been slow throughout the lower Columbia.

Trout stocking continues this week, including at St Louis Ponds in Woodburn. Join ODFW at a Youth Angling Enhancement Program event there this Saturday, April 5 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. These events are designed to introduce young people to the fun of fishing. The department will provide rods and reels, tackle, bait and fish bags for use by young anglers who do not have their own fishing equipment. In addition, ODFW staff and volunteers will be on hand to help participants learn how to bait a hook, cast a rod and land their catch.
