FISHING 101 - First Meeting
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Let's try for Wednesday evening...6 - 8 PM...May 14...Willow Park Pond. See attached maps.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Should be warm enough by then for an outdoor gathering. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Action plan...bring whatever rod/reel combo you have and we will evaluate it for you. For those without tackle, we will put your name in the hat for some of the gear that others are putting up for the cause. Of course, if you can afford to buy tackle, please do so. The donated gear is for kids or folks with severe budget problems.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The talkin' will be about the basic differences between spinning, baitcasting and fly casting. I would like to have volunteers from our panel of experts to give a basic overview of each type, and what their strengths and weaknesses are. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Then, we will wander over to the water and do some casting. First, our "pros" will do some basic demos. Then, we will work with everybody...one on one...to sharpen up your casting skills with your own equipment...or whatever you would like to learn about. Before we are through with you, you will be able to handle most kinds of tackle comfortably and make a better decision about what you REALLY want to use.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]That will be it for the first meeting. After that we will get into knot tieing, different kinds of hooks, making rigs for different kinds of fishing etc. Other meetings will cover the various kinds of lures, flies, etc. and how to decide what to use and when.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The meeting will be open to anybody, regardless of age or current level of skills. You let us know what you want to learn and we will be sure to include it in our curriculum. Not a formal program. Just to help folks get what they need to have more fun and catch more fish.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you know any family with members who you think would like to join us, let them know about it.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Also, for those in the Ogden or Provo areas, think about a good spot to hold meetings in your area and we can get the ball rolling there too. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]For those who have responded that they would like to help...or donate tackle...PM me with what you can provide and we will work out the details.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you can't make this meeting, don't worry. I suspect that we will have a few of the basic intro type meetings over the year. And, there will probably be some repetition at other meetings.[/#0000ff]

[#000000][size 4]Hey Pat,[/size][/#000000]
[#000000][size 4][/size][/#000000]
[#000000][size 4]I can show up for this one and assist (where possible) - can also bring some extra gear if needed.[/size][/#000000]

[cool][#0000ff]Good. Might be a good idea for the "panel" to show up a bit early to take care of tackle downloads and deciding who will do what...if we have not already done that.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We will have only one pro talking about each of the different types of tackle, but we will all move around and work with those who need help in learning tackle and casting.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]No way of knowing at this time whether we will have enough folks to make it worthwhile. [/#0000ff]

May 6th right? I will come and bring a little bit of tackle that I can donate to the cause. I will help out if you need some, can't say I am an expert but will glad to fill in where needed. I will come a little before 6pm. I hopefully can learn some stillwater stuff from the expert fly fisherperson.

[cool][#0000ff]That is May 13th. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]As I recall you know how to wave a fairy wand. How about if you talk about the basic elements of fly fishing and then help with casting demo. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I fish almost exclusively stillwater, and I tie big nasty flies for both trout and warmwater species. I fish mostly spinning gear these days but have been known to use the long rod too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I hope to have a good well rounded group of both pros and newbies. You will be welcome...for whatever side of the table you wanna sit at.[/#0000ff]

O.K. just changed the callender the 13th it is. I can show a few things on casting and some fly basics. Never heard a fly rod called a magic wand before that is a good one!

Orvis 1 just told me about this. This is great TD. I might have to show up for this also, see how it is going.
Sorry I don't have any donations for this, but would like to meet some of you. I will have flies and some good tips.

[cool][#0000ff]Excellent. You can cover fishing for catfish with a handline. NOT.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Don't worry about donating anything right now. We have some tackle and other commitments, so until we get a handle on what we really need there is no reason to get carried away.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]BFT member "riverdog" brought some fly fishing gear over to my place. I still need to go through that and find out just what we have in that department.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I am guessing that the first meeting or two will be very general, but we will probably have one session devoted mostly to fly fishing. Of course we can think of nobody better qualified to cover that subject.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Hey, this will mostly be for people who know a LITTLE BIT about fishing, but want to know more. We would have to start with the real simple stuff for you and you would probably hold the class back.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]But, go ahead and join us...and bring your Snoopy outfit. [/#0000ff]

I will try to make it. I've learned my lesson about promising to show up at events...something always happens to ruin it. So maybe if I don't guarantee, I'll get to come after all? LOL

You would be surprised at how many fish my daughters little barbie pole catches!

I almost bought one of those kid rods, that shoot the bait/line out about 30 feet or so... but then I figured I'd never learn proper casting that way. So I got a regular "grown up" one [Wink]

I have to pick up my boat in Hyrum on Wed. or I'd be there. I need someone to teach me how to pitch with a baitcasting reel. Years of bass fishing and I still can't do it, there is always something to learn. I can admit that.

[cool][#0000ff]Of course we would like to have you with us, but "Pitchin' and Flippin'" are a bit more advanced than what we will be covering in our first few sessions. We will likely be working on basic "Chunkin' and Windin'"[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We have plenty of more advanced baitcast fans on the board. You should be able to find someone to conduct some on-the-water tutorial.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Hope the money you leave at the "altar" at Lee's will make the fishing gods treat you well.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Thanks Cliff. I think we will probably be okay for our first meeting. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]On down the road, depending upon interest and where the newbies want to go, we might ask you to do some more on drop shotting. But, that is getting more into the advanced stuff and this program is to make sure they know the basics first.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Of course, anybody is welcome to show up for the social thing. And who knows...maybe you could use some review too?[/#0000ff]
