#1
BILLINGS - One weeklong bowhunting class and two special weekend classes remain on the schedule for Yellowstone County this spring and summer.
Registration for the weeklong class is at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 5, at the Billings Rod and Gun Club, just west of the Billings airport. The class runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, May 12-16 at the Billings Rod and Gun Club with a field day from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 17.

The special compressed classes are scheduled for the weekends of June 20-22 and July 11-13 with all activities at the Billings Rod and Gun Club. Registration is scheduled for Mondays, June 16 and July 7, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.. Each class runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

All prospective bowhunters born after Jan. 1, 1985, must take both hunter safety and bowhunter education courses before they can buy a Montana archery hunting license. All first-time bowhunters, regardless of age, must complete a bowhunter education course. Montana law requires anyone buying an archery license to show either a previous year's archery license or a certificate of completion from a bowhunter education course.

This year, Montana FWP allows hunters 18 and older to complete the classroom part of the bowhunter course online, then complete requirements for their certificate at a four-hour regional field course. All information needed to register, study and test for the online portion of the class is on the Internet at http://www.bowhunter-ed.com/mt/index.htm.<br>
Montana accepts this independent-study method, completed on your own time and your own schedule, followed by a four-hour field day exercise led by certified Montana bowhunter education volunteer instructors. During the field day, students must demonstrate that they possess the necessary knowledge and skills to become certified, and must also pass the Montana Bowhunter Education test. Participants must complete a field day - set for July 19 at Lake Elmo State Park - within a year after they complete the online portion.

In Montana, bowhunters must complete their classwork and field days by July 31 to qualify for 2008 fall bowhunting licenses.

Anyone 17 years old and younger is required to take the conventional classroom-based course of instruction. However, anyone may use the online program as a resource to learn about bowhunting.
