EXTRA HUNTING OPPORTUNITIES
#1
SheridaN- Hunters will have increased big game hunting opportunities again this fall. Mild winters combined with good fawn production have resulted in white-tailed deer and pronghorn populations being higher than desired in some areas of the Sheridan region.

2007 pronghorn and white-tailed deer seasons are designed to reduce these populations. When the population of big game animals exceeds recommended numbers, they can damage available habitat and livestock forage. High populations also pose an increased hazard to vehicles.

To address high deer numbers, 3,000 licenses for doe or fawn deer are being issued in hunt area 24 near Sheridan. This season begins Sept. 1 and lasts until Dec. 16. Hunters will be able to harvest up to four doe or fawn deer.

"This is a great opportunity for new and experienced hunters to put meat on the table, and at the same time, help landowners reduce the high population of deer," says Sheridan Game Warden Bruce Scigliano. "It is essential to reduce the number of whitetails in the Sheridan area, not only for the health of the land, but also for the health of the deer herds. Hunters can play an invaluable role in this process."

Pronghorn numbers are also increasing in the Sheridan Region with some areas offering two any antelope (type 1) tags and up to four doe/fawn licenses. Most pronghorn hunting is on private land or intermingled public and private land. Therefore, obtaining permission from landowners is essential.

Private land and rural subdivisions means that hunting access takes a bit of planning in some of the best whitetail range near Sheridan, Big Horn and Buffalo. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department maintains a list of landowners who have allowed hunting in the past.
