Results-54th Int'l Billfish Tournament
#1
Our team took home top honors in the 54th International Billfish Tournament in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico this weekend. The three day event was held July 27, 28 & 29th, 2001. Our team of Allen Walker, Dennis McKeown, me, and Captain Chony Quintana won the top overall boat award fishing on our boat, A'Maze-n-Blue with 606 total points.
On Friday, we got on the scoreboard when McKeown caught a Dorado, which weighed 34 pounds. That catch was good for a second place finish in the Open Dorado category for Dennis. I then caught and released a Sailfish, which won 3d place in the Sailfish category based on the time of hookup. Later that day, Allen Walker caught and released a second Sailfish. The big fish of the tournament, a 500 lb. Blue Marlin, was also caught on Friday, putting the boat "Predator" well in the lead.
On Saturday we returned to the same area that produced the two sailfish and at about 11:10 AM achieved a rare double hookup on two Striped Marlin. Dennis McKeown brought the first fish (est 170#) to the boat for a release in 45 minutes and about 20 minutes later Allen Walker's fish (155#)was released. Each released marlin was worth 200 points, giving us a total of 574 points. Waldo then caught two Dorado, weighing a total of 45 pounds and putting the team into the lead after day 2.
Sunday's weather conditions were not ideal for fishing with high winds and rough seas. We scored no points on Sunday, but other boats also faced the same conditions and the lead held up. Allen Walker received the award for 2d place overall angler with 270 points for a released Sailfish and a released Marlin.
We were sponsored by Geico Insurance, M&R Auto and http://www.starlures.com. The team caught two marlin, one sailfish and two dorado on Star Lures and also caught fish on a Kona clone and 7Strand
57 boats and 174 anglers participated in the tournament, which is hosted by the Ernesto Zaragoza Charity Foundation.
