#1
SALEM - Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife officials today announced the selection of Ron Mason of Corvallis to represent local government issues on the 15-member Oregon Hatchery Research Center Advisory Committee.
The committee advises the OHRC senior scientist on activities and functions related to the operation and maintenance of the facility, located west of Alsea.

Committee members serve three-year terms and represent a variety of governmental, conservation, fishing, natural resource, education and scientific interests.

Mason is an elected member of the Board of Education for Linn-Benton Community College and a retired math teacher. He has participated in a number of ODFW meetings related to groundfish, halibut, salmon and other fisheries, and is an avid angler in Oregon's ocean, estuaries and bays.

ODFW officials also announced that four current committee members have been re-appointed to serve additional terms. They are Stan Van de Wetering of Siletz, representing Tribal interests; Chris Vandenberg of Monmouth, representing resource producers; and Jeff Hard of Seattle, Wash. and Barry McPherson of Newport, both representing science-at-large.

A cooperative research project between ODFW and Oregon State University, the Center's mission is to understand the mechanisms that may create differences between hatchery and wild salmon and steelhead, develop approaches to best manage any differences in order to meet fishery and conservation objectives, and help Oregonians understand the role and performance of hatcheries in supporting and protecting Oregon's native fish. The OHRC fosters and supports a wide range of research and education projects and provide unique state-of-the-art facilities, including four simulated streams.
