[#000080]Eastern Sierra Fishing Report[/#000080]

Lower Owens River Wild Trout Section: 9-June-08
The flows are at 400 cfs as of today. The water temperature is in the high 50’s. While the flows are relatively high it is still fishable. The key to success when the river is this high is to nymph it and use a lot of lead. At this flow 4 "AB" size split shot should do the trick. Target the slower water. Some flies to use would be Tiger midges, gold ribbed hares ears, ultra midges and pheasant tails in sizes 16-18. Streamers is also another good choice when the river is high. A long sink tip is in order though. A 20-25 foot tip and 150-200 grains is good. Woolly buggers, spruceaboos and matukas are good choices.
Drifting the Lower Owens River (Laws to Warms Springs Road) 9-June-08
No report
For those of you that have drift boats there is good news. The Inyo County Sheriff is starting to crack down on the people that block the put-ins and takeouts on the river. If you encounter this problem or are hassled about putting your boat in or taking it out, call the Inyo County Sheriff and file a report. The rivers there for all to use equally not just a handful.
Owens River Gorge: 9-June-08
This time of year the fish are very active. The water temperature is just right and it has not been to hot lately. However, I would take water with you. Most any fly will do the trick here just keep it 16 and smaller. I typically use a size 16 yellow or orange stimulator with a flashback bead head pheasant tail or a tiger midge as a dropper.
East Walker River: 9-June-08
The flows are at 175 cfs and the fishing is good. Nymphing with hares ears, pheasant tails, tiger midges and caddis larva have been doing the trick. In the late evening there has been a caddis hatch
Crowley Lake: 9-June-08
As of late Hilton Bay has been doing very well. Not many big fish but numbers of 12-14 inch fish. All in all a good rod bending experience. The Leighton Springs area has been producing as well. The fish are in about 12-15 feet of water. For those of you that are midging, try using zebra or tiger midges in sizes 16-18. Black and olive wooly buggers have been consistent for those tugging streamers.
Pleasant Valley Reservoir: 9-June-08
Tubing near the inlet has been very productive using wooly buggers and matukas in olive and black. Most of what is being caught is the stockers
Hot Creek: 9-June-08
Most of the activity has been from morning to mid-afternoon. Try using wd 40’s, ultra midges, tiger midges on the bottom and BWO’s on top. In the evening there are some fish rising to caddis. Elk hare caddis, hot creek caddis and caddis emergers should do the trick.
Upper Owens River: 9-June-08
The fishing here has been good. Some days better than others though. Nymphing with pheasant tails, hares ears, tiger midges and wd 40’s are as good as any. Stripping wooly buggers, matukas or zoo cougars should do the trick.
San Joaquin (Reds Meadow) 9-June-08
The road is open and the fishing is good. The river is on the high side so be careful. For the most part the fish here feed opportunistically. Pheasant tails, hares ears, caddis larva or zebra midges are as good as any. Or even your favorite fly.
