Hi Folks,
For the week of May 1 through May 7, 2003:
High winds and volatile weather have kept the Rod-Man at port more than he would like the last few days. But we did get out yesterday. We were in pursuit of king mackerel, which had shown up at the 10 mile areas this past weekend. But after the blow we had Monday and Tuesday, we had a bit of trouble finding the fish. We tried the 10 mile and the 17 miles areas with no luck. Working our way back in we finally caught a nice king just 4 miles off the beach in 69.1 degree water. With the very warm temperatures we are going to have over the next few days the kings and spanish and all should be right on the beach.
Here's my report:
Inshore: Red drum and black drum continue to be around the docks in the creeks and the waterway. Best baits are fresh shrimp or cut mullet fished on a carolina rig. Some flounder have shown up in the creeks, but it will probably be a couple more weeks before you can count on them.
Nearshore: Spanish mackerel are here one day and gone the next. the weather and water temperature just hasn't settled enough for them to be constant. The spanish are big and there are some nice blues mixed in with them. Bonito are still in the area, at the three and five mile areas.
Offshore: King mackerel are spotty but can be found from 4 to 20 miles out. Look for them to bunch up any day. Best bait right now is cigar minnows or small ballyhoo slow trolled on Hank Brown Hook-Up king rigs. You can also catch the fish fast trolling with spoons...clarkspoons and drone spoons.
Gulfstream: Lots of wahoo, yellowfin tuna are around with some big mahimahi too. Seas have been a little rough lately, but when you can get there the fish are waiting.
