TubeBabe's Birthday Kitty Party
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Today was TubeBabe's birthday (plenty nine). As usual, she wanted to go fishing for her birthday. Whatta gal.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Tooners "fish_fanatic" and Anglerdan wanted us to show them our spots on the west side of Utah Lake, so we did a mini floatilla. Hit the shoreline about 6:30 AM and were all launched shortly after 7. Great clouds, light breeze, no mosquitos and midges only if you got too close to the tamarisk.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water 78 degrees at launch, with only a light rolling ripple from the dying SE canyon breezes. We all dragged varying baits out into deeper water until we found fish. I was the first one to reach the 8 foot depth and had a zinger on a piece of white bass meat. Set the hook into a stout kitty and was enjoying myself when I noticed that line was streaming off the reel on my baitcast setup. Put the first rod in a holder to let the fish fight itself, and set the hook on the second. it felt bigger than the first. It was. 26 inch kitty and the first was only 24 inches. Still a great way to start a day...double over 24 inches.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Now some trips start good and then take a dive. Not today. We all caught lots of kitties and had hits often enough to keep us busy. Seemed like one of us was always "checking out an inquiry", playing a fish or releasing one. We all kept a few, but we sent back a lot of them too. All four of us caught cats over 26 inches and 6.5 to 7 pounds. Loads of fun on the light gear we were using.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I think Randy and Dan kinda liked the new venue. Lots fewer snags and lots fewer people than the areas they usually fish. Just about ruined our day when we actually heard a boat in the distance...and someone announced it was a water skier. How rude...to disturb the tranquility of TubeBabe's birthday kitty party.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There were only light breezes a couple of times today. Basically glassy conditions most of the time. The water temp climbed up to about 82 by the time we got off the water around 1 PM.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Good fishing with you guys.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Yeah, those Utah Lake kitties are bigger and tougher than the wimpy Willard cookies. This time of year, when the water is warm and the fish are active, they really put up a battle. But, if you have the drag properly set on the rod in the holder the second fish usually do not create much of a problem. In fact, when you quit "beating up" on them, they often settle down and just swim around out there until you are ready to invite them into your net. But, if they take off on a run, no problem.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]That was not the biggest "double" I have had on. On one trip to Lincoln Beach last year I had two fish take off in different directions at exactly the same time. I set the hook on the first one and just put the rod in the holder without checking for size. I then hooked the second one and brought it in first. It was a chunky 6 pounder, and took some time to coax to the tube...and then into the net. After cutting off the spines and slipping it into the basket, I put up that rod and picked up the other one, with the other fish still hooked. When I began working that one in, I could tell it was bigger. It really put a whuppin' on me. Turned out to be just under 10 pounds. But, it really did not start running and cavorting until I put on the pressure to bring it in.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]We have caught a lot of doubles over the years. It always seems to happen after we have gone a while without a hit. Nothing for a long time and then zing - zing...two fish at once. Probably because we pull the baits into a "honey hole" where fish are congregating. We never complain, but it can create some interesting challenges.[/#0000ff]

[Smile]Thank you, everyone, for the Birthday Wishes. The conditions were great for a day on the water and I even caught some fishes ... although a couple got out of my basket while I was getting my tube, etc., out of the water. It was so much fun, I want to do it again!

You know I was busy making a Bday card on the Fambly site. I didn't forget your Bday.

I don't think you let the little whiskers out by accident. We call that Culling. That's where you let the little ones go selectively so that you have something more table worthy for the Kitty Krispies.[cool]
