gar fishing in a river close by

well i have a river close to my house i always go fishing in and see gar every where on the surface but i never know how to catch one..whats the best way to catch them?

Well, as you can see, i posted the same question, but I decided to do some research, and i found this is one of the best ways to catch a gar- Use a small treble hook with a minnow around 3 three inches long. Hook the minnow in the back around the top of the tail, then add a float(If the current is rough, use a weight instead of a float).If a gar hits, let it run a little ways before setting the hook. While it runs, it starts to swallow the minnow, making it easier to hook. The Gars will also hit on Spoons and Jigs.

Walmart sells a brand of spoons called Krocodiles. Get a 2oz size with the Prismatic tape on it. It have used that color pattern in Alabama, Florida, NC and SC.[cool]

i googled gar fishing in NY and it says theyre in the area up there. (longnose was all they mentioned)
