Salmon Region Fishing Information
#1
This report highlights a few of the best places to fish, what anglers are using and what they are catching. The information is compiled from regional Fish and Game fishery managers, local tackle shops and anglers. Other general regional information is available below.

Folks are getting steelhead fever in the Salmon and Challis area, but in the meantime, fishing for cutthroat and rainbows is pretty good. The hoppers aren't out yet, so stick to caddis, stimulators and streamers. The Kids' pond has been stocked with salmon and that's ignited the fishing fever. Anglers are pulling stocked rainbows out of Mosquito Flats. But check with the U.S. Forest Service before heading over to Bayhorse lakes. The road has been closed periodically due to some work going on over there.

In the Stanley Basin the fishing is wonderful. The cloudy water created by last weekend's storms has cleared although it is still a little cloudy on the Main Salmon below Yankee Fork. Anglers report that Valley Creek is also great fishing. The mountain lakes are fishing well this year.

The Main Salmon near Salmon is still pretty muddy from last weekend's storms. Hayden Creek in the Lemhi was blown out by the storm. However, the anglers report good fishing on the Lemhi River, Wallis, William's, Meadow and Iron Lakes.

Don't forget to check with the tackle shop nearest your fishing destination for bait, tackle, additional fishing tips and information on local fishing waters.

1. Check out our Salmon Region Family Fishing Waters program [PDF, 455 KB], with family-oriented fishing opportunities and simplified rules.

2. Anglers must have a valid 2008 license and are reminded to check the 2008 fishing rules brochure for any restrictions and limits.

General Regional Information

The Salmon River is open all year to trout fishing. Whitefish congregate in the deeper runs and can provide excellent catch rates even in cold water. Only adipose fin clipped rainbow trout may be harvested. Try fishing some of the deeper pools and pocket water along the river's edge for rainbow trout.

Williams Lake provides fishing for rainbow trout 12 to 20 inches in length. Fish the upper 10 to 15 feet of water with small baits or lures.
