Discover the Atlatl at Salmon Lake State Park
#1
Visitors to Salmon Lake State Park on Saturday, Aug. 23 will be able to discover the Atlatl at a special evening program. Considered the first true weapon system developed by humans, the Atlatl's origins date back over 30,000 years.

The free program, presented by archaeologist Dave Schwab, begins at 8 p.m. at the state park, about 10 miles south Seeley Lake just off Highway 83.

This ancient weapon was eventually replaced by the bow and arrow and has surprising accuracy and power at close ranges. Modern replicas have been built that can launch a dart over 200 yards. Schwab will discuss the history of the Atlatl, its connections with the local area, and demonstrate how it is used.
