This report highlights a few of the best places to fish, what anglers are using and what they are catching. The information is compiled from regional Fish and Game fishery managers, local tackle shops and anglers. Other general regional information is available below.
Fishing throughout the region is generally good right now. Rivers and streams are producing nice fish for anglers using hoppers and other terrestrial patterns. Be sure to check for access especially when fishing the Lemhi River.
Mosquito Flats Reservoir outside of Challis is fishing very well right now. Anglers report good luck with stocked rainbow trout using just about anything from worms to PowerBait to hoppers. Mackay Reservoir is still low and the reservoir is best accessed by boat right now. Anglers trolling for rainbows report excellent catches of 14" - 16" rainbows near the dam. Some anglers are trying their luck from the bank and have been catching kokanee.
In general the main Salmon River is providing great trout fishing right now, especially in its upper reaches. Fly fishermen are having good luck using mayfly patterns such as tricos and blue-winged olives. Other patterns to try are caddis emergents. Hopper patterns are also being used with success.
The fall steelhead season in the Salmon Region opened on September 1. With the region's cooler weather and generally higher water levels, steelhead are being seen in some river sections earlier than usual. Anglers fishing in section 15 from the Middle Fork of the Salmon River to North Fork have reported catching a few of these big fish.
For some fun fall family fishing, do not forget to check out area ponds. Hayden Ponds near Lemhi are a great place for an afternoon of family fishing. Kids' Creek Pond in Salmon and Blue Mountain Meadows Pond in Challis are also great family fishing waters.
