Ice fishing for catfish

I went ice fishing up in Michigan once, and we used Skipjack as bait, actually got several nice cats. However, it's best if you know the water you're fishing on, when it's not frozen. I've found that cats lay around pretty lazily near structure in the winter, unless the water you're on is fairly deep, then it's a little easier. But I would go with skipjack herring, or anything flavored like catalpa worms, those have always been my best baits. Good luck and God Bless you!

Thanks for the info and blessing. I am going to the reservoir I am going to try to catch the cats at this weekend to sonar out the deep holes and structure. It is only around 20' deep at the deepest part so I hope to get a better idea to know where to start when the water goes hard.

Dog Creek
Went looking to map out the deep spots for the up and coming ice fishing season and see what would be feeding. Found some cooperative pansize trout but had some strong hits on both a worm on a jig and a wedding ring with minnows.

Depth was 14' and 44 deg.

Hers some pic's.

Keep looking to the East
He will be coming in the clouds.

Nice looking place there, I think you should have some luck if you go out after it's frozen over. You can always take a jig or two and try for some panfish. I'm a nut when it comes to ice fishing, I like to go up to Michigan and get with my brother in law on some nice Walleye, if he were on this board I would have him talk to you, he seems to do better fishing in the winter than any other time lol.
You'll have to let us know how it goes, I think you'll do fine if you use natural baits as I mentioned in the other post. [Wink]
