Ecuador January Report
#1
Last January we made a report that described the fishing here like this: ¨Hot weather, warm water, and smoking` fishing¨. Well ……..it seems that history repeats itself.

We have just had some of the most aggressive fishing weeks of the year in this month, starting with the Holiday weekend for New Year´s Eve in Salinas, the Marlin and all around fishing activity has been Non-Stop. We are talking Blues, Blacks, Sails, Tuna, Mahi and all the usual visitors we have around this time of the year. We have not even stopped fishing from Manta and now Salinas is forcing BLUEMARLIN LODGE to multiply itself so we can start its new season in full throttle. Not that we are complaining as you can imagine.

With water temperatures averaging from 78F to 80F this would be ground zero for Big Game fishing now. Maybe that is the reason why the Salinas Yacht Club is hosting in just two weeks the Annual International Tournament with anglers from Puerto Rico, US, Peru and many other countries. That, added to the fact that just last week we were seeing a Grand Slam in one of the boats, kind of makes people want to go out there and fish. Wouldn´t you agree?

Just on New Year´s Eve, almost 30 boats went out during a period of 3 days. The count was at least 50 Marlin strikes (mostly Blues) and counted for 27 releases. Not to mention the dozens of Mahi, Tuna and Wahoo that kept every boat busy. Last weekend with 10 boats out, total releases amounted to 12 and one boat even had 4 on the same day. We are just waiting for the new record to appear. As for the famous Cope spot, which is the best Wahoo fishing spot we have ever seen, one boat tried its luck and came in with 22 Wahoo, after losing some 25 more. The shocking part is that they only fished for 6 hours. Captain Angel de La Rosa of the STAMAS 34 said: ¨It is as if the fish were only waiting to get warmer to show up, just like we do when we head out to the beach at this time of the year¨.

We should be seeing some heavy activity in Salinas like this until April which is when the season usually ends. Thankfully, we have plenty of time to take advantage of it and so do you.

We´ll be attending the Miami International Boat Show next month so we can get a chance to talk some fishing with our friends and fellow anglers. We´ll be mostly in and around the Big Game Room.
