YELLOWTAIL FISHING
#1
Capt Jeff,
Large yellowtail to 40lbs at San Clemente Island.
Could I use some Braided Lines and then put a top shot of 40lb mono so the bait doesn't have to pull as much weight around.Weren't you using a Braided Line on your boat?

Sorry about the delayed answer Jeff, I was still looking at the old board. Yes you should use a mono top shot of about 12 to 15 feet. I match the mono breaking strength to the same as the braided line. Here's a knot I invented for the connection. It was published in Sport Fishing magazine.

I stopped using my Dog Knot on my charter trips because I was breaking mainline on big fish too much. Started costing too much $$$. Now I mostly use an Allbright.

Capt. Jeff
http://FISHinKONA.com

One thing I forgot about tying the knot braid-to-mono.
I always double the braid with a 40 wrap bimini twist and burn the end of the leader first.

Here's my original diagram:
http://aloha-kona.com/dogknot.jpg

I never tried tying on a leader that was smaller diameter than the main line.
Tie it, pull on it, let me know how it works.

Capt.
