California MPA Closure meeting
#1
To quote United Anglers of Southern California's web site,

"The Most Important Event to affect the Future of California's Anglers will take place on 8/24/2001!"

I am posting this letter from one of our, High Desert Saltwater Anglers, club members. This issue is crucial to sportfishing on the west coast. I encourage all anglers to participate. United Anglers will be providing busses to Santa Barbara, visit their web site for more information. http://www.unitedanglers.com

JimA
President HDSA
http://www.SaltwaterAnglers.org

"NOAA's Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and the California Department of Fish and Game will present to the California Fish and Game Commissions a recommendation for the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs) within the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary at a public meeting on August 24. The presentation is the fourth item on the day's agenda, listed as agenda item #21.

An agenda for the Fish and Game Commission meeting can be printed from the following website: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fg_comm

A copy of the recommendation document is available for public review via download from the Sanctuary's web site: http://www.cinms.nos.noaa.gov/nmpreserves.html

The address is:

California Fish and Game Comission Meeting
Friday, August 24, 2001
Veterans Memorial Hall
112 W. Cabrillo Blvd.
Santa Barbara, CA

*** ALERT: We are being had!! ***

The link provided is a feel good propaganda page for the F&GC. You have to drill down to find the actual agenda link at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fg_comm/08-23-01agd.html#fri.

READ THIS CAREFULLY, FOLKS - the day's meeting starts at 8:30am!! The PUBLIC COMMENTARY SESSION is the 2ND agenda item, and is likely to go off at 9am - 10am!! The CIMNS presentation is AFTER the public commentary session, and is likely to go off BEFORE noon.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here that notices the implication of this agenda, besides the fact that the CINMS folks don't know how to use commas. The whole thing will likely be a done deal, BEFORE the buses arrive, in fact before most of us are who have to drive a distance are likely to arrive. Also, please note that wriiten commentaries, petitions and the like, must be submitted no later than August 16th, eight days before the hearing.

This early morning timing is either the result of gross negligence, or blatant fraud. You decide.

We need to turn the tables on them, and show up in force!! Just pretend it is a 3/4 day trip in Santa Barbara. We need to be there before the Commission is! We should all be there when they open the doors. WE CANNOT LET THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS!!

Joel
Support the FREEDOM TO FISH ACT

Thanks for the great response and input. There will definately be some people there that are extremist on both side of the issue. However the sportfishermen need to be "Sportsmen" to have their concerns heard and considered. I would hope in our modern society we can count on equitable treatment. But that's another issue....
JimA
President High Desert Saltwater Anglers
