Sarasota Area Backcountry Report
#1
Capt. Kevin Chamberlain
9/2/01

Though we're in our slow season, we did manage several productive trips in Sarasota since the last report. We've been looking for signs of redfish schooling, but haven't found them in large concentrations. Trout, jacks and ladyfish have been providing the best action. Flounder, bluefish, small grouper and mangrove snapper have been occasional catches and some pompano have been skipped out, too.

Best trout action has been in North Sarasota Bay around Long Bar and Sister Keys on Slimy Slugs, DOA TerrorEyz and live shrimp. The plastic baits have worked well unless the water was full of grass, when live shrimp were substituted under popping corks.

On Friday, the day before snook season opened, a 29" snook nailed a gold spoon that was cast to a redfish, laying in a cut near Sister Keys. Yesterdays trip brought plenty of trout action from the same area and a 41/2 pound redfish just south of Bishops Point. Hopefully, redfish will gather back into schools after the full moon.

Thanks,
Capt. Kevin

To see photos from recent trips, click on http://www.flatsangler.com.
