SALEM, Ore. - The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission will meet in Salem on Friday, May 15 to adopt the 2009 summer and fall salmon seasons for the ocean and Columbia River.
The meeting will begin at 8:00 a.m. at ODFW Headquarters, 3406 Cherry Ave. NE, Salem, and proceeds through this agenda.
The Commission will consider adopting 2009 ocean and Columbia River salmon seasons for sport and commercial fisheries in keeping with Pacific Fishery Management Council guidelines adopted in April. For the second straight year, the PFMC has closed most ocean commercial and recreational chinook fishing from Cape Falcon south to the California border due to the continued decline of Sacramento fall chinook. The single exception will be a brief 10-day recreational season off Brookings.
However, due to strong forecasts for both hatchery and wild coho salmon, the Commission will be able to consider a recreational ocean fishery beginning in late June with a quota of 117,000 marked fish and a commercial fishery in September with a quota of 11,000 fish.
The Commission also will consider 2009 Columbia River recreational fisheries for summer chinook and fall fisheries for chinook and coho. Fishery managers are forecasting improved returns for most stocks in 2009 and anglers can expect expanded fishing opportunities from 2008.
Finally, the Commission will be asked to review and initiate contested case proceedings to revoke the commercial fishing licenses of persons convicted of three or more fishing violations in three years.
