SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will host a youth fishing event at the Alton Baker Canoe Canal in Eugene on Saturday, May 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is free and no pre-registration is required.

The event is part of ODFW's Youth Angling Enhancement Program, designed to introduce young people to the fun of fishing. The department will provide rods, reels, tackle and bait for use by young anglers who are fishing for the first time or do not have their own fishing equipment. Participants should feel free to bring their own equipment if they prefer.

ODFW staff and volunteers will be on hand to help participants learn how to bait the hook, cast the rod and land the fish. ODFW's Willamette Hatchery is stocking the canal with approximately 1,300 legal-sized fish for the event. An additional 300 larger fish from Alsea Hatchery will also be released.

"This is a unique opportunity for new anglers to experience some great fishing right in their own back yard," said Erik Moberly, ODFW biologist.

Under the 2009 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations, anglers aged 13 and under are not required to have a license, while those 14-17 must possess a Juvenile Angling License, which can be purchased from any ODFW license outlet for $6.75. All other anglers must have an adult fishing license. Licenses will not be sold at the Canoe Canal event. All fishing regulations continue to apply for this event.

The Alton Baker Canoe Canal is within Alton Baker Park and can be accessed off of Club Road in Eugene.

For information about the event at Alton Baker Canoe Canal, call the ODFW Springfield office at (541) 726-3515. To find out more about other YAEP events throughout the state.
