Reel Candy, Abacos, Bahamas May 25 report
#1
We were very fortunate to have 6 great guys from the Russ Robinson group fish with us for a couple days. The weather was horrible with winds pushing 30 knots and rainstorms all day on day one. These guys were extremely hard-core and could care less what the fish god’s were dishing out for them, they wanted to go fishing.
Saturday was the worse of the two days and after a mystery strike and several hours of solid 8 footers, the group decided servezas at the Abaco Beach Resort Tiki Bar was a better choice. Day two saw a better forecast and seas had dropped to 3-5. We warmed up with the always present mahi mahi and just about all in the group got to crank on the reels.
A couple hours passed without a strike when off in the distance we spot one of the most beautiful sites a bored offshore fisherman could hope for; a Frigate Bird off the starboard beam. Amazing how something so simple can be such a significant clue into Mother Nature’s game of life.
We ran down the bird and made a pass on the down-sea side of it and quickly had several peanut dolphin racing into the spread. I’m not sure they were as much trying to eat the big lures we had out or perhaps trying to mate with them. Let’s just say none of the little buggers got hooked.
On the second pass it happened. We had rigged the obligatory blue and white Islander with a long strip bait and it got nailed hard. The fish never jumped so we had no idea what we had at first. As we settled into the fight, it was becoming more and more apparent the man in the blue suit was ringing our doorbell.
The angler did an awesome job staying tight on the fish, despite using the two-handed reach over tactic (just bustin your chops man, you did an excellent job!). After about a fifteen minute fight, we were able to get the Marlin on the leader, put a tag in it and snap a few quick photos. Clean release and high-fives all around.
Of course, we had yet another cherry popped and another dunking at Boat Harbour. Great job guys, see you all again next year !
The weather is absolutely perfect right now and should continue through the HMY Billfish Blast going on this week. We are booked and double booked this week so we should get some more reports coming throughout the week.
Tight lines everyone!!
