PUBLIC MEETING MAY 21 ON ADJUSTMENTS TO COMMERCIAL HERRING TAKE RESTRICTIONS
#1
DURHAM, N.H. -- A public meeting to discuss the allowable "days out" measures for commercial herring harvesters during the 2009 fishing season will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's Marine Fisheries Division, 225 Main Street, Durham, N.H. Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) Atlantic Herring Section Members from the states of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts will participate. The meeting is open to the public.

The number of allowable "days out" is adjusted with the aim of keeping commercial fishermen from exceeding the total allowable catch for Management Area 1A to avoid having to close the fishery early.

The current "days out" agreement requires herring harvesters from Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts to take 7 days out of fishing in Management Area 1A until June 1, 2009. (Landing is currently prohibited on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday -- no herring harvest is allowed through May 30).

For more information about the public meeting, call N.H. Fish and Game's Region 3 office in Durham at (603) 868-1095.
