TRINIDAD, Colo. - The Colorado Wildlife Commission will examine draft regulations pertaining to Habitat Stamp and game damage legislation, discuss the Division of Wildlife Strategic Plan and hear staff comment on the Five-Year Review of Big Game Season Structure at its June workshop in Trinidad.
The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Quality Inn, 3125 Toupal Drive.
The new draft regulations will reflect changes to the Habitat Stamp Program pursuant to Senate Bill 09-235 and to game damage provisions pursuant to Senate Bill 09-24. The Commission will adopt final Habitat Stamp and game damage regulations at its July 9 meeting in Ft. Collins.
Under the new regulations, a Colorado Wildlife Habitat Stamp is no longer required to enter State Wildlife Areas. Hunters and anglers are still required to purchase a $5 Habitat Stamp for each of the first two licenses they buy per year for a total of $10. Non-license buyers can still purchase a stamp in order to contribute to habitat protection and for the search and rescue benefits.
In addition, Division staff will update the Commission on updates to the Division of Wildlife Strategic Plan, specifically related to wildlife recreation and wildlife education and information. The Commission will also hear staff presentations on the new hunter, angler, and wildlife enthusiast outreach strategy, prediction of future elk license numbers and revenue, and Blue Mesa Reservoir lake trout/kokanee management objectives.
The meeting will also feature a discussion on the Five-Year Review of Big Game Season Structure, focusing on nominations for additional limited elk Game Management Units. The Commission will decide which nominated units will move forward in the process. Game Management Units 54, 55 and 551 (north of Gunnison) and units 75, 751, 77, 771 and 78 (east of Durango) have been nominated. The Commission will make a final decision at its September meeting on which Game Management Units, if any, will be added as fully limited.
The Commission will hear public comment on the Big Game Season Structure at all meetings and workshops during the process. Testimony may be given on any aspect, but will be most effective if directed at the Big Game Season Structure topic being discussed at that meeting. People who wish to testify on this item should fill out a "blue sheet"--Request to speak before the Wildlife Commission--and give it to any Division of Wildlife staff. Time of testimony may be limited by the Commission Chair. The usual time limit is three minutes.
