Catfishing tricks

Hey, i moved here just last year from New York. I've been asking people around here (Lynchburg, VA) if they have any good catfishing tricks. One guy told me that dipping shrimp in vanilla is a good trick. I used to just use chicken liver before but is there anything better to use in the upper/middle James or any good spots? I have a good, easy to get to spot already (black water creek trail downtown near percivals island).

an uncle from down that a way used to use a crawler and spat on it, he had better than fair results...

using dead shad on the bottom or even suspended works, tho the faster the water the closer to the bottom you want to get....

Try clam snouts they stay on the hook better.Leave chicken liver an clam snouts in the sun for a day before using.It really stinks!
