SALEM, Ore. - People representing all aspects of the management and conservation of salmon, trout and steelhead will converge on Oregon's capital city in September to share some of the latest information about the region's signature fish.
More than 40 speakers are scheduled to share their latest findings in research, habitat restoration, fish propagation, education and outreach during the conference Sept. 11-13 at the Oregon 4-H Conference and Education Center in Salem.
The event is sponsored by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) and will highlight current projects and practices aimed at enhancing Oregon's salmon, trout and steelhead populations.
"Salmon, trout and steelhead have always played an important role in Oregon's culture, ecology and economy," said Shelly Miller, ODFW STEP Program coordinator. "Oregonians have a major stake in the future of these fish. During this conference we will celebrate advances that have been made to protect and enhance these species. We also will take this opportunity to highlight some of the challenges that lie ahead."
In addition to giving scientists the opportunity to get together to compare notes, the conference is designed to give teachers, watershed council members, students, volunteers and the media tools and information they can use to spread the word about the importance of conservation and salmon recovery.
"Many teachers throughout Oregon have incorporated salmon studies into their lesson plans," said Miller. "This will be a good place for them to pick up ideas and materials they can take back to their classrooms."
The theme of the conference is "Spawning Solutions Through Creative Ideas." Advance registration is required at a cost of $15 for individuals, $20 for families, and $5 for students. The deadline for registration is Aug. 31, with a $5 discount on individual and family registrations for those received prior to Aug. 1. Meals are available during the Saturday and Sunday sessions at the following rates: breakfast $6.75, lunch $7, and dinner $10. Bunk style lodging is also available at the 4-H Center for $16.75 per night.
