Struisbaai Fishing, South Africa
#1
The weather in Struisbaai for the weekend is looking absolutely great, and we had a charter for Friday morning. Our charters, a father and his two teenage sons, only planned a short 3 hour trip and therefore we decided to look for some bottom fish and hopefully a cob or two near the river mouth and Oyster banks.
The very first spot we dropped anchor at provided us with a lot of entertainment as the younger son, a boy around 12 years old, hooked into a very big fish on his light bottom tackle.
After a fight of nearly 40 minutes, and lots of discussions on what was at the end of the line, he managed to bring a monster spearnose skate of around 100 kg to the boat. We took the phootos and released the fish, but the Smile on his face cannot be captured by camera or words. He definately has got the bragging rights at school on Monday!
We fished a few spots for the next 3 hours and managed to land a wide variety if fish. A lovely red stumpnose of 2.5kg was followed by a roman of 2.7 kg and another red stump of 2.1 kg. A lone cob also ended in the boat, followed by another few red romans and red stumps.
We dropped the anchor at our final spot and proceeded to reel in the fish. In between a few shy sharks and spiny dogfish we landed another cob of 2kg and more red romans. Our young friend also lost a lovely red stump right at the boat. The suprise of the day was 3 juvenile red steenbras which were all safely released, and a fat Zebra of around 1.2 kg
