SALEM, Ore.- Bob Sallinger, conservation director for the Audubon Society of Portland, will head the list of speakers scheduled to speak at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's STEP Conference Sept. 12 in Salem.
More than 40 speakers from a wide range of scientific, conservation and community groups are scheduled to share their insights on topics ranging from global warming and wave energy to sea lion predation, habitat restoration and working with volunteers. The conference is sponsored by ODFW's Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program.
Sallinger, one of Oregon's best known conservationists, will give an overview of Metro's new initiative to create the world's best system of parks, trails and natural areas and talk about its implications for biodiversity.
Sallinger has worked for the Audubon Society of Portland since 1992 and currently serves as the Society's conservation director. His responsibilities include developing the Society's environmental policy and advocacy initiatives and directing the Society's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. In addition to his work with Portland Audubon, Sallinger serves on the Portland Parks Board and the Board for the Coalition for a Livable Future, is a publicly elected director at the East Multnomah County Soil and Water Conservation District, and chairs the City of Portland Watershed Science Advisory Group. His favorite pastime is hanging out under urban bridges monitoring peregrine falcons and he has received several awards for his efforts to restore Portland's peregrine falcon populations.
Sallinger is scheduled to address the conference at 7 p.m.

"His experience and involvement in conservation issues gives him a unique perspective to share with the people who will be attending this conference. We look forward to gaining his insights."
The STEP Conference will be held at the Oregon 4-H Conservation and Education Center, located on 300 acres of forest land eight miles northwest of Salem. The event is open to the public. Registration is required and costs $15 for individuals. Registration forms can be obtained at ODFW's Web site.
