ATLANTIC HERRING SECTION TO HOLD "DAYS OUT" CONFERENCE CALL SEPTEMBER 2, 2009, TO REVIEW AREA 1A CATCH RATES -- PUBLIC INVITED TO PARTICIPATE
DURHAM, N.H. -- The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Atlantic Herring Section will hold a conference call on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at 3:00 p.m., to discuss the allowable number of "days out" for commercial herring harvesters.
The purpose of this call is to review updated 2009 Area 1A catch rates and consider whether adjustments are necessary to allow for full harvest of the June-September quota, and prevent an overage that would reduce the October-December quota. Poor weather conditions have caused lower than expected catch rates and the current harvest is around 4,000 metric tons less than predicted. The Section will consider whether the current agreement of two landings days (5 days out) is sufficient to guarantee full harvest of the June-September quota. The Section agreed to hold a conference call because there is insufficient time to hold a meeting before spawning closures begin in early September, and the end of the quota period on September 30, 2009.
